Gehlot Accuses Centre of Misleading on Aravalli, Demands Revival of SC-Monitored CEC

Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday accused the central government and Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav of misleading the public on Aravalli protection, demanding restoration of the Supreme Court-monitored Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to resolve half the issues.

Gehlot welcomed the Supreme Court's stay on its earlier order redefining the Aravalli range but questioned the abolition of the original CEC, which reported directly to the apex court."The previous CEC included judges, activists, and experts, monitored by the Supreme Court," Gehlot said. "Why was it abolished? Reinstate it, and half the problem will be solved."

He claimed the government replaced it with a department-controlled panel whose recommendations could be ignored. Gehlot also noted the mystery surrounding the resignation of the earlier amicus curiae, welcoming the court's reappointment of the same person.

He criticized Yadav for supporting decisions that sparked protests, including attempts to redefine hills below 100 metres height as non-Aravalli, potentially opening areas to mining. The former CM urged decisions prioritizing future generations, without politicizing the ecologically sensitive range.

Public outrage had forced the Centre to ban new mining leases in Aravalli. The controversy highlights tensions over balancing development and conservation in the fragile ecosystem spanning Rajasthan, Haryana, and beyond.
