The incident has once again raised serious concerns about internal financial monitoring systems within banking institutions, especially at a time when financial fraud cases are witnessing a steady rise across the country.

What Is the Case About?

The alleged fraud came to light in 2025 during an internal review at the Bilha SBI branch. Discrepancies were noticed in bank records and account entries, prompting Branch Manager Piyush Bara to initiate a departmental inquiry.

The investigation revealed that then cashier Tejavath Thirapathamma, along with other staff members, allegedly manipulated bank records and siphoned off over ₹2.6 crore.

Following the discovery of the SBI Bilaspur Bank Scam:

The cashier was immediately suspended

She was attached to the Regional Business Office (RBO) in Jagdalpur

A formal complaint was lodged with ACB Bilaspur

However, after her suspension in June 2025, the accused neither reported to Jagdalpur nor returned to the Bilha branch. She remained untraceable for eight months.

ACB Action and Arrest

ACB Bilaspur registered an FIR on January 19, 2026, under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

During the investigation, ACB collected departmental inquiry reports and other documentary evidence. Informants were also deployed near the Bilha branch to track the accused’s movements.

On Thursday, officials received information that the accused had visited the bank premises. Acting swiftly, the ACB team surrounded the area and arrested her. Authorities are now preparing to seek police remand to further investigate the money trail and identify other possible individuals involved in the fraud.

Bigger Questions on Banking Oversight

The SBI Bilaspur Bank Scam has exposed potential gaps in internal checks and balances within the banking system. Financial experts suggest that banks must strengthen:

Regular internal audits

Real-time digital transaction monitoring

Dual authorization mechanisms for high-value transactions

Clear accountability frameworks for staff

According to a financial analyst, “Such incidents directly impact public trust in banks. Transparent systems and proactive surveillance are essential to prevent similar frauds in the future.”

Lessons for Customers

Although this case involves internal manipulation, customers are advised to remain vigilant:

Regularly monitor bank statements

Activate SMS and email transaction alerts

Immediately report any suspicious activity

Related Banking Fraud in Raipur

In a separate incident, an SBI branch in Raipur recently reported an online fraud of ₹17.52 lakh. Fraudsters allegedly used forged letterheads to mislead a branch manager into transferring funds. These back-to-back cases highlight rising risks from both internal and cyber fraud within the banking ecosystem.

The SBI Bilaspur Bank Scam is not just a case of embezzlement but a wake-up call for stronger financial governance. While ACB’s swift action has led to the arrest of the prime accused, the investigation is ongoing, and further revelations are expected.

The case underscores the urgent need for improved transparency, tighter internal controls, and enhanced accountability in India’s banking sector.
