A Balod canal drowning incident claimed lives of an ambulance EMT and his daughter; rescue teams recovered the girl’s body 20 km downstream after an overnight search

Tragedy in Tandula Canal

A tragic drowning incident in Balod has claimed the lives of a 35-year-old ambulance employee and his 12-year-old daughter after they were swept away by strong currents in the Tandula canal. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon near Piparchhedi village, sending shockwaves across the district.

Initial reports indicate that the victims were bathing in the canal when the water flow suddenly proved too strong. While the father’s body was recovered the same day, the daughter’s body was found nearly 20 kilometres downstream on Wednesday morning.

Family Visit Turns Fatal

According to officials, the deceased, identified as Taiman Ganjir, had travelled from Dhobanpuri village to his in-laws’ house in Piparchhedi for a family wedding. On Tuesday around noon, he went to the nearby canal with his daughter Palanki and a relative’s child.

Locals said the outing was routine, with several families visiting the canal during the day. However, what began as a casual visit turned into a fatal accident within minutes.

Learning to Swim

Sources familiar with the matter said Ganjir was attempting to teach his daughter how to swim when the incident occurred. At the time, water release from the Tandula reservoir had increased, resulting in a strong current in the canal.

The three children reportedly misjudged the depth and force of the water. Soon after entering, they began to struggle and were pulled along by the current.

Rescue Efforts Begin

Hearing their cries, locals rushed to the spot. One of the girls, identified as a niece, was rescued after bystanders jumped into the canal. However, Ganjir and his daughter were quickly swept out of sight.

Police and disaster response teams reached the scene shortly after being alerted. A search operation was launched with the help of divers and local volunteers. Authorities also coordinated with officials managing the Gangrel dam to temporarily reduce water discharge and aid rescue efforts.

Bodies Recovered Hours Apart

Divers managed to locate Ganjir’s body around 400 metres from the site later that evening. The search for his daughter continued overnight.

On Wednesday morning, officials confirmed that Palanki’s body had been found nearly 20 kilometres away from the original spot, highlighting the intensity of the current in the canal.

Service Background

Ganjir was employed as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the 108 ambulance service and was posted at the district hospital in Balod. He had previously served in the Pakhanjur region and had recently been reassigned following a change in service operators.

Colleagues described him as an experienced and dedicated worker who had been in the emergency response system for several years.

Village in Mourning

The incident has left Piparchhedi and surrounding areas in deep shock. Residents said the family had arrived just a day earlier for a wedding celebration, which has now turned into a scene of grief.

Local authorities confirmed that a case has been registered and further investigation is underway to ascertain all circumstances surrounding the accident.

The Balod canal drowning incident has once again raised concerns about safety near fast-flowing irrigation canals, especially during periods of high water release. Officials are expected to review safety measures and issue advisories to prevent similar tragedies.

A spine-chilling road tragedy has shaken the Balod district of Chhattisgarh. On the Dalli Rajhara-Bhanupratappur main road, a speeding 14-wheeler truck crushed a moped rider, dragging him for nearly 50 meters. the victim, a watchman for the Forest Department, died on the spot in an accident so violent that remains were scattered across the highway.

The Balod road accident was captured on live CCTV, sparking massive outrage among local residents who hit the streets in protest.

A Healer’s Tragic End

The victim has been identified as 53-year-old Shyam Singh Masiyare, a resident of Parsada village. Beyond his role as a watchman at the Forest Department nursery, Shyam Singh was a well-known local Vaidya (traditional healer). People from far and wide visited him for his Ayurvedic expertise.

On the day of the incident, March 5, he had gone to the Dondi area to collect medicinal herbs. As he was transitioning from a dirt path onto the main road on his moped, a speeding truck (CG04 LM 3499) coming from Dalli Rajhara struck him head-on.

Dragged to Death: The Chilling Details

According to police reports and the truck accident video from nearby surveillance cameras, the impact was so severe that the moped became lodged in the truck’s front wheels. Instead of braking, the driver continued to speed, dragging Shyam Singh for approximately 50 meters toward the local Ram Temple.

By the time the truck came to a halt, the victim's body was mutilated beyond recognition. Although locals rushed him to the hospital via ambulance, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Public Outrage: Dondi Road Protest

As news of the gruesome death spread, an atmosphere of anger engulfed the region. A large number of ward residents and local traders initiated a Dondi road protest, blocking the main highway.

Key Demands from Protesters:

Strict speed limits for heavy mining vehicles.

Installation of speed breakers and safety signals in residential zones.

Immediate compensation for the victim's family.

During the blockade, mining vehicles were completely halted, though general traffic was eventually allowed to pass after administrative intervention. The SDM and police officials arrived on the scene around 10:40 AM to pacify the crowd and promise stricter enforcement of traffic laws.

Expert Perspective: The Cost of Speed

This incident highlights a disturbing trend in Chhattisgarh news regarding road safety. Heavy vehicles frequently transit through narrow town roads at high speeds to meet mining deadlines, often ignoring local commuters.

"Road safety isn't just about signs; it's about the accountability of heavy vehicle operators in residential corridors," says a local safety advocate. "Losing a traditional healer and a dedicated worker like Shyam Singh is a loss for the entire community's heritage."

The Balod tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by unregulated heavy traffic. While the police have registered a case against the truck driver, the community remains on edge, demanding long-term infrastructure changes to prevent another life from being dragged away.
