Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav on Saturday said preparations for Simhastha-2028 must be planned on a scale that can handle nearly 40 crore devotees, calling the event the world’s biggest religious gathering and urging coordination with neighbouring states to manage the expected rush.

The chief minister was speaking at a one-day workshop on “Simhastha-2016 ka Sankalp, Simhastha-2028 ka Sankalp” after arriving in Ujjain around 11.25 am by helicopter. He inaugurated the session at Anjushree Hotel, where officials reviewed infrastructure plans, departmental responsibilities and lessons from the 2016 Simhastha.

Senior officials who were posted in Ujjain during the 2016 event shared their experiences and discussed the logistical challenges that may arise in 2028. Ujjain Divisional Commissioner Ashish Singh made a presentation on the ongoing preparations. Officers from across the state attended the workshop.

Yadav said the last Simhastha had faced traffic bottlenecks in several places and that similar problems must not be repeated. He said the administration should prepare in advance for movement along not just Ujjain’s main routes, but also the wider network connecting the city with nearby districts and states.

“Simhastha-2028 will be the world’s largest mela. If 40 crore devotees are expected, arrangements must be ready at that scale,” the chief minister said, according to officials present at the programme. He added that coordination with neighbouring states would be essential so that pilgrims coming from border areas do not face avoidable disruption.

The chief minister also said that Ujjain is not just a city for a holy dip in the Shipra, but a place where devotees will visit multiple religious sites. For that reason, the state is aiming to restore and upgrade temples across the city and surrounding areas. He said the government has taken up the renovation of all major temples as part of the broader spiritual and civic planning.

Yadav noted that several transport facilities have improved since the 2016 event. He pointed out that the Fatehabad railway track was not operational at the time, but is now available. According to him, road widening has also been carried out on routes that earlier caused congestion.

A major part of the discussion focused on accommodation and movement. The chief minister said government arrangements should be strong enough that pilgrims do not have to depend only on private hotels or buildings. He also said facilities at dhabas and hotels along routes up to 100 km from Ujjain will need to be strengthened to absorb the expected traffic and footfall.

Officials said the workshop was meant to align departments well before the massive religious gathering, which is expected to involve not just crowd management but sanitation, transport, health, security and emergency response systems. The focus, they said, is on avoiding the kind of pressure points seen during earlier editions of the event.

The administration is now expected to move from planning to phased execution, with district and divisional teams preparing detailed action points. The chief minister said the goal is to make Simhastha-2028 “better and historic” with collective effort and coordination across agencies and neighbouring states.

MP Government Announces ₹10 Lakh Subsidy for Dairy Units with 25 Cows

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav unveils new incentives for dairy farming and natural agriculture, aiming to boost milk production and rural livelihoods.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav on Wednesday announced a major incentive package for dairy farmers, stating that the state government will provide a subsidy of ₹10 lakh for setting up dairy units with 25 cows under a project costing approximately ₹40 lakh. The announcement was made during a public event in Delanpur, where the Chief Minister emphasized the government's commitment to strengthening the dairy sector and promoting natural farming practices.

Addressing residents and farmers, Dr. Yadav said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to increase milk production and improve the economic condition of rural households. He also announced financial support for farmers engaged in natural farming along with cattle rearing, under which eligible beneficiaries will receive ₹1,100 per month.

The Chief Minister noted that India's share in global milk production needs to increase significantly and that states such as Madhya Pradesh can play a crucial role in achieving that goal through targeted support for dairy entrepreneurs.

Focus on Dairy and Natural Farming

According to Dr. Yadav, dairy farming offers a sustainable source of income for rural families while also supporting agricultural activities through the use of organic manure and natural farming methods.

The newly announced subsidy is expected to encourage farmers, youth, and rural entrepreneurs to establish organized dairy units. Officials believe the scheme could generate employment opportunities and contribute to the state's agricultural economy.

The monthly financial assistance for cattle owners practicing natural farming is also aimed at promoting environmentally sustainable agricultural practices while reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers.

Development of Religious Corridors

During the event, the Chief Minister also highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to develop major religious destinations across Madhya Pradesh.

Referring to the development of Chitrakoot, he said nearly ₹2,000 crore is being invested to transform the pilgrimage town, drawing comparisons with the large-scale infrastructure development undertaken in Ayodhya.

Dr. Yadav stated that all locations associated with Lord Ram's journey through present-day Madhya Pradesh would be developed as important pilgrimage destinations. According to traditional accounts, Lord Ram spent more than eleven years in the region during his exile and traveled through areas including Chitrakoot, Panna, Shahdol, Jabalpur, Vidisha, and Khargone.

The Chief Minister also announced funds for local infrastructure works at the temple complex in Delanpur, including flooring of the assembly area, construction of a boundary wall, and installation of a drinking water tank.

Opposition Criticized Over Development Issues

While speaking at the gathering, Dr. Yadav also targeted opposition parties, accusing them of being uncomfortable with discussions centered on development and infrastructure projects.

Highlighting preparations for Simhastha 2028 and the proposed Indore Metropolitan City project, he said the state government remains focused on delivering results rather than engaging in political debates.

"We are committed to development-oriented governance. Work related to Simhastha 2028 is progressing, and the vision of a metropolitan development model for the region will soon become a reality," he said.

Impact on Rural Economy

Policy experts believe the dairy subsidy scheme could strengthen rural incomes and encourage diversification in agriculture. By linking dairy farming with natural farming practices, the government aims to create a more sustainable agricultural ecosystem while expanding milk production capacity.

The announcement is expected to benefit small and medium-scale farmers looking to enter the organized dairy sector and may play a role in boosting employment and economic activity in rural Madhya Pradesh in the coming years.

The long-awaited groundbreaking ceremony for the Indore-Ujjain Greenfield Corridor will take place on June 20 at Chandrawatiganj in Indore district. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar are scheduled to attend the event, marking the formal launch of one of the state's most significant infrastructure projects.

The corridor is being developed with a special focus on Simhastha 2028, one of the country's largest religious gatherings. Once completed, the project is expected to provide faster and more efficient travel for millions of pilgrims, tourists, and daily commuters traveling between Indore and Ujjain.

Ahead of the ceremony, Water Resources Minister Tulsiram Silawat and Indore Collector Shivam Verma reviewed preparations at the event venue, Sagar Garden in Chandrawatiganj. Officials inspected arrangements related to security, traffic management, parking facilities, electricity supply, drinking water, seating, and stage construction.

Authorities have directed all concerned departments to complete preparations on schedule and ensure smooth coordination for the successful conduct of the program.

Key Features of the Project

The Indore-Ujjain Greenfield Corridor will be a 48.10-kilometre access-controlled four-lane highway with provisions for future expansion. The route will begin near the Pitra Parvat area of Indore and extend up to the Simhastha Bypass region in Ujjain.

The project is being implemented by the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC) under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The estimated construction contract value stands at approximately ₹1,089 crore.

Officials believe the corridor will emerge as one of the most important transportation links in the Malwa region, connecting major religious, industrial, and urban centers.

Travel Time to Reduce Significantly

One of the biggest benefits of the project will be a substantial reduction in travel time between Indore and Ujjain. The journey, which currently takes considerably longer during peak traffic hours, is expected to be completed in just 30 to 35 minutes once the corridor becomes operational.

The new route is also expected to ease congestion on the existing highway and provide a dedicated high-speed connection between the two cities.

Improved connectivity between Indore Airport and Ujjain will further benefit tourists and pilgrims visiting the Mahakaleshwar Temple and other religious destinations in the region.

Boost for Tourism and Economy

Officials view the corridor as more than just a road infrastructure project. It is being planned as a strategic religious, tourism, and economic corridor that will support regional development.

The project is expected to strengthen connectivity between Mahakal Lok, Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Indore Airport, and key industrial hubs across the Malwa region. Improved transportation infrastructure is likely to encourage investment, boost trade activities, and generate new economic opportunities.

Tourism stakeholders also anticipate a rise in visitor numbers due to easier access to major pilgrimage centers.

Target Completion Before Simhastha 2028

The construction agency has been given approximately 24 months to complete the project. The state government aims to ensure that the corridor is fully operational before the commencement of Simhastha 2028.

With preparations now entering the execution phase, the project is expected to play a crucial role in managing future pilgrimage traffic while supporting long-term urban and economic growth across central Madhya Pradesh.

The Indore-Ujjain Greenfield Corridor is widely regarded as a transformative infrastructure initiative that could redefine connectivity and development in the region over the coming years.

Simhastha 2028 to Get Unified Digital Platform for Real-Time Traffic Updates

Authorities plan AI-powered system to provide traffic, transport and fair information across a 250-km radius during Simhastha 2028

Preparations for Simhastha 2028 in Ujjain are gaining momentum, with authorities planning a technology-driven management system aimed at improving crowd control, traffic regulation and visitor convenience. Officials have announced plans to create a unified digital platform that will provide real-time information related to the Simhastha fair, including transport routes, parking facilities, traffic conditions and access points. The proposed system will cover an area of nearly 250 kilometers around Ujjain, enabling pilgrims and visitors to receive accurate updates before and during their journey. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to use advanced geospatial technology, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure to manage one of the world's largest religious gatherings. Authorities believe the platform will significantly enhance administrative efficiency and improve the overall experience for millions of devotees expected to attend Simhastha 2028.

The proposal was discussed during a high-level meeting held at the Collector's Auditorium in the Emperor Vikramaditya Administrative Complex. Divisional Commissioner and Simhastha Mela Officer Ashish Singh reviewed the progress of preparations with officials and technical experts.

Representatives from the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics (BISAG) participated in discussions focused on integrating the PM Gati Shakti Platform with advanced geospatial technologies.

Single Platform for Complete Information

Officials said the proposed platform will bring together multiple data sources through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), allowing visitors to access essential information from a single digital interface.

The system is expected to provide real-time updates on train schedules, bus routes, local transport availability, traffic congestion and alternate travel routes. Authorities also plan to include details about parking zones, bathing ghats, entry points, emergency services and communication facilities.

The objective is to ensure seamless movement of pilgrims while reducing congestion across the fair region.

AI and Geo-Mapping Focus

As part of the preparations, a technical presentation was delivered by the Google Cloud team through video conferencing. The presentation focused on the use of artificial intelligence, cloud computing and geo-mapping technologies for large-scale event management.

Officials discussed how AI-powered systems could help monitor crowd density, predict traffic patterns and improve emergency response mechanisms during peak pilgrimage days.

The adoption of modern digital tools is expected to strengthen decision-making and enable faster coordination between administrative departments.

Planning for Large-Scale Crowd Management

Simhastha is one of India's largest religious gatherings, attracting millions of devotees from across the country and abroad. Managing transportation, security and public services for such a large population remains a major administrative challenge.

Authorities believe geospatial technology can play a crucial role in monitoring movement patterns and ensuring efficient utilization of infrastructure. Real-time information sharing is expected to reduce delays and help visitors plan their travel more effectively.

Coordination Between Agencies

During the review meeting, Divisional Commissioner Ashish Singh directed concerned departments to work closely with technical institutions and prepare a comprehensive implementation roadmap.

Officials emphasized that all infrastructure and technology initiatives should be integrated well in advance of the event to ensure smooth operations during the fair.

The administration is also reviewing ongoing development projects linked to Simhastha 2028, including transport networks, public amenities and crowd-management systems.

The impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s appeal for fuel conservation is now visible in Ujjain administration’s functioning. From Wednesday, senior administrative officials in Ujjain started travelling together in a single traveller bus instead of using multiple government vehicles for inspection of Simhastha-related works. Officials said the move was aimed at reducing unnecessary fuel consumption, lowering government expenditure, and minimising traffic congestion during official inspections.

Officials Travel Together

On Wednesday morning, nearly 15 senior officers travelled together in an Urbania traveller vehicle to inspect the 29-kilometre-long ghat development area being prepared for the upcoming Simhastha fair in Ujjain. The inspection team included Divisional Commissioner and Simhastha Mela Officer Ashish Singh, Collector Roshan Kumar Singh, Municipal Commissioner Abhilash Mishra, UDA CEO Sandeep Soni, Tehsildar Alok Chore, and officers from the Water Resources Department, traffic police, and other departments. Officials jointly reviewed construction activities and infrastructure arrangements being developed for pilgrims expected during the religious gathering.

Daily Inspection Continues

Administrative officials have been conducting regular inspections of Simhastha preparations for the last one week.Earlier, officers from different departments used to reach the inspection site in nearly 15 separate vehicles every day. These included SUVs and official cars belonging to departments such as PWD, Revenue, Municipal Corporation, Water Resources, and Police.Officials generally travelled nearly 16 kilometres daily during inspections apart from additional travel from their official residences to the ghat area. According to administrative estimates, most vehicles used for inspections were high-fuel-consumption SUVs with air conditioners running continuously during field visits.

Major Reduction in Fuel Use

Officials explained that fuel consumption and expenditure have reduced significantly after the shift to a common traveller bus. Earlier, each vehicle reportedly consumed nearly four litres of fuel during inspection rounds. Based on the number of vehicles involved, daily expenditure on petrol and diesel was estimated at around Rs 6,750.

However, on the first day of the new arrangement, the traveller bus reportedly covered nearly 12 kilometres while consuming only around 2.5 litres of diesel. Officials said the fuel expense for the bus trip remained below Rs 250, though the vehicle itself has been hired at a daily rental cost of around Rs 4,100. The administration believes the move will still result in overall savings by reducing multiple vehicle usage and operational expenses.

Traffic Pressure Also Reduced

Collector Roshan Kumar Singh said the earlier practice of multiple government vehicles moving together created unnecessary traffic pressure in the city. He stated that a convoy of several official vehicles often caused inconvenience to regular commuters and increased congestion near inspection routes. Now, with all officials travelling in one vehicle, both fuel use and traffic-related issues are expected to reduce considerably. Officials described the initiative as a practical administrative reform that could be adopted in other government activities as well.

Inspection of Simhastha Works

The inspections are focused on preparations for Simhastha, one of the largest religious gatherings in the country, where crores of devotees are expected to arrive in Ujjain. Authorities are currently reviewing development of ghats, approach roads, public facilities, traffic arrangements, and infrastructure projects linked to the event. Officials begin inspections early in the morning and also conduct foot surveys covering nearly six kilometres daily to examine on-ground progress. During the visits, officers issue instructions to contractors and department teams regarding quality, timelines, and public convenience. Construction and beautification works are currently underway at several ghats along the Shipra river.

Administration Stresses Teamwork

Simhastha Mela Officer Ashish Singh said the new travel arrangement was introduced in line with the fuel-saving message given by the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister. He stated that earlier, officers from different departments travelled separately, leading to avoidable fuel consumption and higher government expenditure. Travelling together in one vehicle, he said, would not only save fuel but also strengthen coordination and teamwork among officials. Administrative officers believe discussions during shared travel will also improve communication and faster decision-making during field inspections.

The initiative is being viewed as a symbolic but significant step towards promoting fuel conservation and environmentally responsible governance. Experts say government departments adopting shared transportation methods can reduce fuel dependency and help lower emissions in urban areas. The move has also generated discussion among citizens regarding efficient use of public resources and reduction in VIP-style vehicle movement. The administration’s decision comes amid wider national conversations around energy conservation, sustainable transport, and responsible governance practices. Officials indicated that similar measures may be considered for other government inspection activities in future if the model proves effective.

Ujjain woke up on Tuesday, March 17, to a day that blended academic celebration with transformative development announcements. The 30th Convocation of Samrat Vikramaditya University — formerly known as Vikram University — was held at 11 a.m. in the Swarna Jayanti Auditorium of the Madhav Bhavan Administrative Complex. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and Governor Mangubhai Patel graced the occasion, turning what is traditionally an academic milestone into a citywide moment of pride and promise.

By the time the day was over, Ujjain had received development commitments worth over ₹700 crore — a number that signals the state government's serious intent ahead of Simhastha 2028.

The Convocation: 103 Gold Medals, 74 PhDs, and One D.Litt

The centrepiece of the morning was the convocation ceremony itself, chaired by Governor Mangubhai Patel in his capacity as Chancellor of the university. The event honoured the academic achievements of hundreds of students who had completed their degrees and research programmes.

A total of 103 students were awarded gold medals for outstanding academic performance across disciplines. Seventy-four students received their PhD degrees, recognising years of dedicated research contributions across science, humanities, commerce, and social sciences. One student was conferred the prestigious D.Litt degree — the highest academic honour the university can bestow — recognising exceptional contribution to literature or knowledge.

Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and national saint Bala Yogi Umeshnath Maharaj and MP Anil Firoziya were present as distinguished guests, lending a blend of spiritual and political significance to the occasion.

After the Ceremony: Gita Bhawan Bhumi Pujan

Following the convocation, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav proceeded to the Triveni Vihar Yojana site opposite the Shipra Vihar Commercial Complex, where he performed the Bhumi Pujan — the ground-breaking ceremony — for the Gita Bhawan, to be built at a cost of ₹77 crore.

Spread across one lakh square feet within the Triveni Vihar Yojana, the Gita Bhawan is envisioned as a multipurpose cultural, literary, and social activities hub for Ujjain and the broader Malwa region. The complex will include a 12,700 square foot auditorium and a 3,600 square foot e-library — facilities that Ujjain has long needed as a centre of spiritual tourism and academic culture. For a city that welcomes millions of pilgrims and visitors every year, a world-class cultural complex of this scale is not a luxury — it is long overdue.

₹662 Crore for Simhastha 2028: The Clock Is Ticking

The most consequential announcement of the day came in the form of a ₹662.46 crore package for city development works under the Ujjain Development Authority — encompassing urban infrastructure upgrades and dedicated development projects tied to Simhastha 2028.

Simhastha — the Kumbh Mela held at Ujjain on the banks of the Shipra river — is one of the largest religious gatherings on the planet. The 2028 edition is expected to draw tens of millions of pilgrims from across India and the world. Preparations for an event of this scale require years of careful infrastructure planning — roads, ghats, lighting, drainage, crowd management zones, public amenities, and spiritual spaces all need to be built or upgraded to handle unprecedented footfall.

The ground-breaking for these works on March 17, 2026, gives exactly 24 months before the event's expected commencement window — a tight but workable timeline if execution begins immediately and stays on track.

Ujjain's Moment — But Accountability Must Match the Budget

Ujjain carries a weight that few Indian cities can match. It is a city of mythology, of Mahakal, of the Shipra, of Vikramaditya's legendary court. Every investment here carries symbolic significance far beyond its monetary value.

The ₹700 crore package announced today — spanning a gold-standard convocation for hundreds of young scholars, a cultural Gita Bhawan for citizens, and critical Simhastha 2028 infrastructure — represents a genuine and welcome commitment to the city's future. The Samrat Vikramaditya University rebranding itself in the emperor's name is a statement of cultural ambition. The Gita Bhawan is a statement of civilisational pride. And the Simhastha development push is an acknowledgement that India's greatest religious gathering deserves India's best infrastructure.

But Madhya Pradesh has seen grand announcements before. The real test — as always — is in the execution, the quality of construction, the transparency of spending, and the timely completion of every project under the ₹662 crore umbrella before the first pilgrim arrives in 2028.

Ujjain deserves nothing less.

The Clock Is Ticking: Indore's Race to Complete Simhastha 2028 Infrastructure Before the Deadline

Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya is pushing Indore officials to complete all Simhastha 2028 infrastructure on time. Metro, flyovers, railways, roads — here's what's at stake.

Two years. That is all the time that separates Indore — India's cleanest city for seven consecutive years — from hosting its most consequential responsibility in a generation. Simhastha 2028, the great Kumbh Mela of Ujjain, is scheduled from March 27 to May 27, 2028. With an estimated 14 crore devotees expected to descend on the Ujjain-Indore corridor, the infrastructure being built and reviewed today will determine whether this is India's finest hour in religious tourism — or a logistical catastrophe.

Madhya Pradesh Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has been in the thick of this race for months, conducting inspections, issuing directives, and applying pressure on officials and agencies to ensure that every pending project crosses the finish line with time to spare. His interventions have revealed both the scale of what is being attempted — and the very real risks of what happens if it isn't delivered.

What Is Simhastha, and Why Does Indore Matter?

Simhastha is the Kumbh Mela held every 12 years on the banks of the Kshipra River in Ujjain. It is one of the four major Kumbh Melas in India and carries enormous religious significance for Hindus worldwide. The previous Simhastha was held between April 22 and May 21, 2016. The upcoming one in 2028 will be only the second time the festival has been organised in the modern era of mass transportation — with a pilgrimage population that dwarfs any previous edition.

While Ujjain is the spiritual heart of Simhastha, Indore functions as its logistical gateway. Indore hosts Madhya Pradesh's largest airport (Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport), the state's primary railway junction, and its most developed road network. Every pilgrim arriving by air, every passenger train routed through Central India, every bus and car from Gujarat, Maharashtra, or Rajasthan will pass through Indore before reaching Ujjain — just 55 kilometres away.

This is why Minister Vijayvargiya has described Indore and Ujjain as a single integrated unit for Simhastha purposes. Arrangements need to be developed "in a coordinated manner in Indore, Ujjain and Dewas areas," he has said repeatedly. The success of Simhastha 2028 is inseparable from the infrastructure state of Indore in 2028.

The ₹18,840 Crore Blueprint: 523 Works Across 19 Departments

The scale of the government's ambition for Simhastha is unprecedented. The preliminary action plan approved by the MP Cabinet Committee covers 523 works worth ₹18,840 crore across 19 departments — spanning Water Resources, Energy, Public Works, Culture, Archaeology, Urban Development and Housing, and more.

The first Cabinet Committee meeting approved 19 priority projects worth ₹5,955 crore. These include schemes for ensuring continuous water flow in the Kshipra River, construction of barrages on the Kshipra and Kanh rivers, the Kanh River diversion project, and ghat construction along the river bank.

CM Mohan Yadav has directed that all major infrastructure projects should undergo fortnightly review — a monitoring cadence typically reserved for disaster response or election preparations, not routine public works. That level of urgency reflects the government's awareness that two years for 523 projects is not a comfortable timeline.

Vijayvargiya has been categorical about what success looks like: "Our main target is Simhastha, and we want all the work to be completed before the festival."

Indore Metro: The Most Visible Pending Challenge

The Indore Metro is the single most high-profile piece of infrastructure in the city — and also one of the most complex and visibly incomplete. Vijayvargiya's inspections of the Indore Metro project, most recently at the Gandhinagar Depot, have revealed serious coordination failures among the multiple agencies working simultaneously on metro construction, road restoration, and city development.

After metro-related excavation and construction work, agencies were required to restore roads and civic amenities to their pre-work condition. The restoration was found to be inadequate — so inadequate that during the last monsoon season, roads failed to drain properly and flooding was blamed on the Municipal Corporation rather than the metro contractor responsible for the incomplete restoration.

Vijayvargiya did not mince words: "There are many instances where poor coordination between agencies results in negative impacts on the city's beautification and civic amenities."

His instruction: all agencies — metro, municipal corporation, IDA, and others — must sit together within 15-20 days to coordinate their work zones, timelines, and restoration responsibilities.

A separate and significant structural concern also surfaced during the inspection. The metro station design has a critical flaw: no parking space was planned near the stations. In a city where millions of pilgrims will need to park vehicles and access metro stations during Simhastha, this is not a minor design oversight — it is a visitor experience failure. Vijayvargiya has asked IDA to provide land for parking and directed the architect to find an engineering solution. He called it "a major mistake."

Lavkush Square Flyover: ₹180 Crore Race Against June 2026

One of the most time-sensitive projects is the Level-2 flyover at Lavkush Square — one of Indore's most congested intersections, located on a critical arterial route. The flyover is being constructed at an estimated cost of approximately ₹180 crore and is scheduled for completion by June 2026.

District Collector Shivam Verma conducted an on-site inspection of the under-construction flyover, accompanied by IDA CEO Dr. Parikshit Jhade. Officials confirmed that the flyover will play a crucial role in managing the anticipated surge in vehicular traffic during Simhastha. Verma directed the executing agency to complete the project strictly within the June 2026 deadline, while ensuring service lanes damaged by construction activity are repaired and maintained immediately.

The June 2026 deadline gives the government 22 months of buffer before Simhastha begins — enough time to correct any execution issues, provided the flyover is actually delivered on time. Any delay pushes remediation into 2027, which is when the final Simhastha countdown preparations will intensify.

Indore Railway Station: Seven Storeys and 10,800 Passengers Per Hour

The Indore Railway Station redevelopment is arguably the most strategically critical project in the Simhastha infrastructure portfolio. The station is the primary entry point for pilgrims arriving from northern, western, and southern India by rail. The redevelopment project, with a total cost of ₹450 crore, will transform the station into a seven-storey terminal with a capacity of 10,800 passengers per hour, designed to serve the city's needs for the next 50 years.

Vijayvargiya has been one of the most vocal advocates for ensuring this project is completed before Simhastha. At a review meeting with railway officials, he asked pointedly: "Simhastha will bring lakhs of people through Indore station. If the work is not completed on time, the situation could become chaotic. What preparations are in place to avoid this?"

Railway officials responded by outlining a phased delivery plan: construction is being carried out in 60-metre sections to ensure ongoing train operations are not disrupted. Passenger movement will begin on the new infrastructure as soon as the first two floors of the seven-storey terminal are ready. Full completion is targeted by 2028 — which gives the project just months of buffer before the mela begins.

Also related to rail connectivity: Indore MP Shankar Lalwani confirmed that more than 300 trains are planned to operate from Indore, Ujjain and nearby stations during the Simhastha event period. The state government has already approved the introduction of a Namo Bharat Rapid Rail (Vande Bharat Metro) service connecting Indore and Ujjain, with 12-coach trainsets capable of carrying 1,150 seated passengers and up to 2,000 standing.

CM Mohan Yadav has additionally urged the Union Railway Ministry to advance the completion deadline of the Indore-Manmad rail line from 2029 to 2028, which would create a new rail corridor connecting MP's Barwani, Khargone, and Dhar districts with Maharashtra's Nashik and Dhule — a connectivity boost with long-term economic implications far beyond Simhastha itself.

Kshipra River and Ghats: The Spiritual Infrastructure

While roads, flyovers, and railways get the most attention, Simhastha's core purpose is the holy dip in the Kshipra River. Ensuring that the Kshipra flows continuously and cleanly through Simhastha is a non-negotiable deliverable.

A dedicated scheme for continuous water flow in the Kshipra is underway, including barrages on the Kshipra and Kanh rivers and the Kanh diversion project. The CM has specifically directed that ghats be constructed with sensitivity to different categories of pilgrims — expanded to accommodate large numbers, but also designed so that senior citizens and women are not put at risk during crowded bathing sessions.

The Ujjain-Indore division is also being developed as a broader religious-spiritual circuit, with improved road and transport links to Pashupatinath Temple in Mandsaur, Dada Dhuniwale in Khandwa, Bhadwamata, Nalkheda, and Omkareshwar. The goal is to create a pilgrim itinerary where Simhastha visitors can access multiple sacred sites in the region with ease.

The Shadow Over Simhastha: The Bhagirathpura Water Tragedy

Any account of Indore's Simhastha preparations that doesn't acknowledge the Bhagirathpura contaminated water tragedy of February 2026 would be incomplete — and dishonest.

At least 35 people died in Indore's Bhagirathpura locality after consuming contaminated Narmada river water supplied through taps by the Indore Municipal Corporation. The tragedy exposed serious failures in civic infrastructure maintenance and water quality monitoring in a city that has spent years building its reputation as India's cleanest.

The tragedy is directly relevant to Simhastha for a simple reason: if Indore cannot maintain safe drinking water supply for its own permanent residents, the question of how it will safely supply drinking water to millions of temporary pilgrims during a two-month mela is an urgent one. The government must treat Bhagirathpura not just as a tragedy to be managed politically, but as a warning signal about systemic gaps in civic infrastructure that need immediate attention before 2028.

Vijayvargiya's response to the tragedy — attributing part of the problem to residents being "uneducated" — drew sharp criticism from the Congress and civil society and remains a political liability. But beyond the optics, the tragedy demands a technical reckoning with the adequacy of Indore's water supply, treatment, and distribution systems before they are placed under the extreme stress of Simhastha.

Prayagraj as the Model: Lessons from Maha Kumbh 2025

One thing the MP government has gotten right is the decision to study the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh 2025 as a reference model for Simhastha 2028. CM Yadav has directed that best practices in crowd management, drone surveillance, and artificial intelligence applications from Prayagraj be adapted for Simhastha. A dedicated conference is planned in Ujjain to bring together companies and startups specialising in these technologies.

The Prayagraj Kumbh was the largest peaceful religious gathering in human history — and its success was attributed in no small measure to the use of real-time AI-powered crowd monitoring, integrated traffic management, and coordinated law enforcement. For Simhastha, where 14 crore visitors are expected over 62 days, these technologies are not luxury additions — they are safety requirements.

A special cell has also been directed to coordinate with Indian Railways for smooth movement of devotees, recognising that the rail system will be the backbone of pilgrim movement.
