Digvijaya Singh Says His Mission Is to Protect Religion, Rules Out Active Electoral Politics

Bhopal: Senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh on Tuesday said he would no longer pursue active electoral politics and would instead dedicate himself to the protection of Sanatan Dharma, asserting that his future public life would focus on religious and social causes rather than political positions.

Speaking while responding to questions related to the alleged Ram Temple donation controversy, Singh said his new mission would be to safeguard faith and religious values. He maintained that his campaign would not be politically motivated and would continue for the rest of his life.

"I understand Sanatan Dharma, and I also understand the BJP, VHP and RSS. My mission now is to protect religion. I will not do politics anymore. I want to work for the protection of faith till my last breath," Singh said while addressing the media.

The veteran Congress leader said he has turned 80 and believes it is time for a new generation to take up larger political responsibilities. Reflecting on his political journey, Singh said the Congress party had given him multiple opportunities to serve the public, including five terms as an MLA, two terms in the Lok Sabha and two terms in the Rajya Sabha.

According to Singh, he had already informed the Congress leadership that he did not wish to seek another parliamentary term and preferred that younger leaders be given the opportunity to move forward.

His latest remarks come ahead of a proposed "accountability yatra" from Ujjain to Ayodhya, which he has described as a non-political march aimed at raising questions over the alleged handling of Ram Temple donations. Singh has repeatedly said the march will not carry party flags and will focus on issues related to faith and accountability rather than electoral politics.

The Congress veteran has remained active in public life despite earlier speculation over his political future. Earlier this year, he clarified that while he did not want another Rajya Sabha term, he was not retiring from public life or from the Congress party. His latest statement signals a shift away from active electoral politics while continuing public engagement through religious and social issues.

Singh has been one of the Congress party's most prominent leaders in Madhya Pradesh, serving as Chief Minister from 1993 to 2003 and later representing the state in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Over the years, he has remained an influential voice on political, constitutional and social issues.

Further details regarding the proposed religious outreach programme and its schedule are awaited.

The Congress intensified its preparations for the upcoming Datia Assembly by-election on Saturday by holding a major workers’ convention, where senior party leaders gathered to discuss electoral strategy and organizational coordination. The meeting, however, began on an unusual note as former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Jitu Patwari arrived nearly four hours behind the scheduled time.

Despite the delay, party workers welcomed the leaders enthusiastically at the venue, a hotel in Datia, where hundreds of Congress members and local leaders had assembled since the morning. Following their arrival around 2 p.m., Digvijaya Singh and Jitu Patwari interacted with party workers before joining the closed-door deliberations. Local leaders later addressed the gathering, while party workers awaited speeches from the senior leadership.

The convention is being viewed as a crucial exercise ahead of the Datia by-election, with the Congress expected to finalize its electoral strategy and possibly identify its candidate for the prestigious contest. Party insiders believe the discussions are aimed not only at strengthening the campaign but also at resolving internal differences that have surfaced over ticket distribution.

Several prominent Congress leaders have emerged as potential contenders for the bypoll ticket. Former MLA Ghanshyam Singh and former Minister Awadhesh Nayak are among the leading aspirants. At the same time, supporters of former MLA Rajendra Bharti have been demanding that the party consider a member of his family for the nomination. District Congress president Ashok Dangi Bagda and city Congress president Ajay Shukla are also reportedly in the race.

The event also revived memories of the controversy surrounding the 2023 Assembly election ticket. Political circles have long maintained that Awadhesh Nayak’s candidature was dropped at the last moment after Rajendra Bharti secured the party nomination. Addressing party workers, Nayak referred to that episode, saying his ticket had been finalized before being withdrawn under unexpected circumstances. Nevertheless, he asserted that he would fully support whichever candidate the Congress ultimately chooses, stressing that defeating the BJP remains the party’s priority.

Former MLA Ghanshyam Singh also attempted to project unity, stating that he had no personal insistence on contesting the election and would stand by the party’s decision. However, he acknowledged that both Rajendra Bharti’s family and Awadhesh Nayak had legitimate claims for consideration.

While the meeting focused on electoral planning, it also exposed organizational concerns within the party. Senior Congress leader Raju Dangi publicly questioned the strength of the party’s grassroots network by highlighting the low attendance of booth-level presidents at the convention. Addressing the senior leadership from the stage, he remarked that ordinary workers often receive attention only during elections and are ignored for the rest of the political cycle.

Signs of factionalism were also visible outside the conference hall, where some workers wore T-shirts carrying slogans expressing opposition to a local leader, underscoring the internal challenges the Congress faces ahead of the by-election.

Meanwhile, former MLA Rajendra Bharti remained absent from the convention. Party leaders said he is currently in Delhi following a medical procedure and is also awaiting a hearing scheduled for July 8 in connection with an election-related matter before the High Court.

Originally planned for Thursday, the workers’ convention was rescheduled to ensure the participation of senior leaders. Apart from Digvijaya Singh and Jitu Patwari, several other prominent Congress figures were expected to attend, reflecting the importance the party is attaching to the Datia bypoll.

Political observers believe the outcome of the closed-door meeting could determine not only the party’s candidate but also its campaign strategy, as the Congress seeks to present a united front against the BJP in one of Madhya Pradesh’s closely watched electoral contests.

Senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh launched a scathing attack on the Central government, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Saturday over alleged financial irregularities and donation theft at the Ram Mandir Trust. Speaking at a press conference in Ujjain, Singh labeled the trust's General Secretary, Champat Rai, as "corrupt" and demanded the immediate registration of an FIR against him.

Singh argued that since the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust was directly constituted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ultimate accountability for any financial discrepancy rests with the Prime Minister's Office.

Massive Awareness Campaign Across 609 Panchayats

The veteran leader announced that the Congress party will not let the issue slide and is planning a massive rural outreach campaign to take the allegations to the grassroots level.

Congress Rural Outreach Blueprint (Ujjain District):

├── Target Jurisdiction: 609 Gram Panchayats

├── Operational Units : Specialized sector and mandal-level committees

└── Core Strategy : Door-to-door distribution of descriptive leaflets

"Congress has formed dedicated committees across all 609 panchayats in the Ujjain district. Our workers will go door-to-door to inform common citizens and Sanatana believers about how the institutional donations meant for Lord Ram's temple were siphoned off," Singh stated.

Serious Allegations Over Gold, Silver, and Foreign Funding

Digvijaya Singh questioned Champat Rai’s credentials and association with religious affairs, alleging that structural auditing has exposed severe mismanagement regarding high-value donations.

"Who is Champat Rai? He hails from Uttar Pradesh and has no inherent background in theology or religious administration. He was an RSS pracharak who was later absorbed by the VHP. The public display of simplicity is a facade. Massive discrepancies have been detected in the accounting of donated silver bricks, jewelry, cash, and foreign contributions," Singh alleged.

He further leveled criticism at the temple's Pran Pratishtha (consecration) ceremony held in Ayodhya, claiming that established Vedic traditions were openly violated. According to Singh, scriptural norms dictate that congregational rituals must be performed by a married couple (sapatneek), whereas individuals not meeting the criteria were permitted to sit for the core rituals.

"RSS Grabbing Mahakal Temple Land," Claims Singh

Turning his focus to local governance, Singh accused the RSS of encroaching upon prime land belonging to the historic Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain. He stated that his opposition dates back to the tenure of former BJP Chief Minister Sunder Lal Patwa, who allegedly allotted temple land to an RSS-affiliated wing.

Singh claimed that he had legally challenged the land transfer in court at the time, adding that the organization has built commercial guest houses on temple properties while marginalizing traditional seers and sadhus. "The current administrative ecosystem is so heavily politicized that common devotees cannot even access the premium Bhasma Aarti slots without recommendation letters from the Bajrang Dal," he alleged.

Warning Issued to CM Mohan Yadav Over Land Scams

During the press briefing, the former Chief Minister waved several files and official land registry documents before reporters. While refusing to prematurely disclose individual names, Singh stated that he has received a fresh batch of incriminating documents following recent investigative media reports on local land scams.

Shifting focus to current Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Singh offered sharp political counsel to the Ujjain-native CM.

"The Chief Minister has hoarded an excessive number of portfolios. Bureaucrats and subordinate officers will commit irregularities under his watch, but the constitutional accountability will fall squarely on him. Do not let this happen, because as an active opposition, we are not going to spare you on the floor of the house," Singh warned.

CM Mohan Yadav and senior leaders exuded confidence amid claims and counter-claims.

The contest for the third Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh intensified on Monday as BJP candidate Mahesh Kewat filed his nomination papers in the Vidhan Sabha. The move came hours after Congress nominee Meenakshi Natarajan submitted her papers, setting the stage for a direct fight on June 18.

Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, who accompanied Kewat along with state BJP president Hemant Khandelwal, expressed strong confidence. “I have full faith that the BJP will take its third candidate also on the path of victory,” Yadav said after the filing.

BJP Leaders Exude Confidence

Senior BJP leaders rallied behind the new candidate. Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya claimed that Bina MLA Nirmala Sapre remains firmly with the party. “We are fully confident of winning the third seat. Mahesh Kewat is an excellent candidate,” Vijayvargiya said. He also dismissed concerns over horse-trading, asserting trust in BJP MLAs.

Other leaders struck a similar note. Khajuraho MP VD Sharma talked of an “historic victory” extending to the third seat, while Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar said the party expected more votes than its current strength. Senior BJP functionaries, including Deputy CM Jagdish Devda, were present at the party office as activity picked up through the day.

Mahesh Kewat, who hails from Orchha in Bundelkhand, reached the assembly with senior leaders. His family had offered special prayers at Orchha earlier in the morning. Kewat himself said he would fulfil the responsibility given by the national leadership “100 per cent”.

Congress Shows United Front

On the Congress side, Meenakshi Natarajan filed her nomination in the presence of state president Jitu Patwari, Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, former MP Digvijaya Singh and several MLAs. She struck a combative note, describing the contest as one of ideologies. “We will fight unitedly and we will win,” Natarajan said, accusing the BJP of lacking political morality.

Congress leaders projected strength despite the BJP’s surprise third candidate. “We have 64 MLAs and Meenakshi Natarajan will get 67 votes,” claimed Junnardeo MLA Sunil Uikey. Digvijaya Singh alleged the BJP fielded the extra candidate only to create confusion as it lacked sufficient votes.

Internal Dissent in Congress

The day also saw signs of unease within Congress ranks. Naresh Gyan Chandani, a two-time candidate from Bhopal’s Huzur seat and a Digvijaya Singh supporter, resigned from the party, reportedly upset over Natarajan’s selection. Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar said the party would discuss the situation and decide on further steps, including possibly moving MLAs out of the state.

Some Congress MLAs, including Arif Masood, were reportedly shifted to Delhi amid speculation of horse-trading.

Background and Numbers Game

The third Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh became open after the term of a sitting member ended. BJP had already fielded Tarun Chugh and Rajnish Agrawal, who filed nominations on Saturday. The party finalised Kewat’s name late Sunday night after hectic deliberations at the CM House and BJP office involving central observers.

Congress has accused the BJP of resorting to tactics to poach or confuse its legislators. BJP leaders countered that every party has the right to field a candidate and they have surplus support.

The Election Commission has set June 18 as the polling date for the seat. With both sides claiming victory, the coming days are likely to see heightened political activity and closer scrutiny of MLAs’ movements in Bhopal.

Political observers note that the outcome will depend not just on numbers but also on how effectively each side manages its flock in what has become a high-stakes prestige battle ahead of future electoral cycles.

A fresh political storm has emerged over the NEET-UG examination as senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a comprehensive white paper on alleged irregularities and paper leak incidents in exams conducted by the National Testing Agency. The demand comes amid continued scrutiny of the NEET-UG process and rising concerns among students.

The issue relates to the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted by the National Testing Agency on May 3, which was later cancelled on May 12 following allegations of a paper leak. The matter is currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation, intensifying national debate on exam transparency and system accountability.

White paper demand on NTA exams

In his letter to the Prime Minister, Digvijaya Singh has urged the government to publish a detailed white paper covering reported irregularities in examinations conducted by the National Testing Agency over the past eight years. He has also sought clarity on the action taken in each case.

Singh, who chairs the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, stated that repeated concerns over exam integrity are undermining student confidence in the examination system. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in high-stakes national exams.

NEET-UG cancellation and probe

The NEET-UG 2026 examination, held on May 3, was cancelled on May 12 after allegations of question paper leaks surfaced in multiple regions. The case was subsequently handed over to the CBI for investigation.

Officials have not yet released a final report on the scale or source of the alleged leak. However, the cancellation has triggered widespread concern among lakhs of medical aspirants across the country, many of whom are now awaiting clarity on future steps.

Student concerns and system trust

The controversy has once again brought the credibility of national entrance examinations under focus. Education experts note that repeated allegations of irregularities in competitive exams can significantly impact student morale and trust in recruitment systems.

Singh argued that at a time when students face immense academic pressure, it is essential to restore confidence through transparent disclosures and systematic reforms in examination processes.

Background of repeated concerns

In recent years, the National Testing Agency has faced multiple allegations related to exam conduct, including concerns over technical glitches, logistical errors, and suspected leaks. These issues have led to legal challenges and policy-level discussions on examination reforms.

The NEET-UG exam, in particular, has frequently been at the centre of public debate due to its large-scale participation and high stakes for medical admissions across India.

Official response and legal angle

While the matter is under investigation, the Supreme Court has also previously declined pleas seeking a re-test in computer-based mode, adding a judicial dimension to the ongoing controversy.

Authorities have maintained that due process is being followed and that corrective action will be taken based on investigation findings. The CBI probe is expected to determine the extent of the alleged irregularities.

The Election Commission of India on Friday announced that elections to 24 Rajya Sabha seats from 10 states will be held on June 18. The move comes as 24 sitting members, including Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Digvijaya Singh, are set to retire between June 21 and July 19. Nominations can be filed till June 8.

The announcement sets the stage for a fresh round of indirect elections to the Upper House, where members are chosen by elected representatives of state assemblies rather than directly by voters.

Key States and Vacancies

Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka will each see polls for four seats. Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will elect three members each, while Jharkhand will fill three seats. Single seats will be up for grabs in Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.

Among the prominent faces retiring are former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda from Karnataka and several other senior leaders across parties. The list of retiring MPs includes names like Ayodhya Rami Reddy Alla and Parimal Nathwani from Andhra Pradesh, and George Kurian and Sumer Singh Solanki from Madhya Pradesh.

How the Process Works

Unlike Lok Sabha or assembly elections, Rajya Sabha polls follow a system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. The value of each MLA’s vote is fixed based on the strength of the state legislative assembly and the number of seats going to polls.

Each MLA’s vote carries a value of 100 in the calculation. This method ensures that larger parties usually secure most seats in line with their strength in the respective assemblies. However, cross-voting and strategic alliances sometimes throw up surprises.

Political Significance

The upcoming elections hold importance for the Congress party, which is seeing several senior leaders step down from the Upper House. Mallikarjun Kharge’s seat from Karnataka and Digvijaya Singh’s from Madhya Pradesh will particularly be watched closely as both leaders continue to play influential roles in national politics.

The results will also reflect the current ground realities in these states following recent assembly elections and shifts in political equations. Parties will now begin intense calculations to finalise candidates and manage their numbers in the assemblies.

Timeline and Preparations

With polling scheduled for June 18, the Election Commission has set a tight schedule. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is expected to be around June 10, though official notification is awaited. Counting of votes is likely to take place on the same day as polling or shortly after.

State election authorities have already been directed to make necessary arrangements. Security and logistical preparations for the smooth conduct of these elections are expected to begin soon.

Impact on Upper House Composition

The Rajya Sabha, with a total strength of 245 members, sees one-third of its elected members retiring every two years. Of the 233 elected seats, these 24 vacancies represent a significant batch. The 12 nominated members, appointed by the President, remain unaffected by this exercise.

As political parties gear up for candidate selection, the focus will be on balancing experience, regional representation and loyalty. The outcome will influence the strength of various parties in the Upper House, where debates on key legislation often play out.

The Election Commission’s timely announcement gives parties enough window to strategise while maintaining the constitutional schedule for the continuous functioning of the Rajya Sabha.

Congress Faces Growing Caste Pressure for Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha Seat

Sindhi community joins Dalit and Brahmin leaders in staking claim to the vacant Upper House seat from the state, intensifying internal deliberations in the Congress ahead of the election.

Caste Equations Heat Up

The Congress in Madhya Pradesh is witnessing heightened caste-based demands for the Rajya Sabha seat that will fall vacant following the end of senior leader Digvijaya Singh's second term on April 9. Party workers and community representatives have stepped up efforts to influence the ticket distribution, turning the selection process into a delicate balancing act of social representation.

Digvijaya Singh Opts Out

Former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh has categorically ruled out contesting for a third term in the Rajya Sabha. He made the announcement earlier this year during a convention of SC and ST organisations in Bhopal, signalling his desire to focus on grassroots politics and organisational work in the state. His decision has opened the field for fresh claimants from various social groups within the Congress fold.

Dalit Leadership Demands Representation

Soon after Digvijaya Singh's statement, Madhya Pradesh Congress SC Department president Pradeep Ahirwar urged the party high command to field a Dalit leader for the seat. He argued that the vacancy provided an opportunity to strengthen Scheduled Caste representation in Parliament. Former minister Sajjan Singh Verma extended support to this demand, highlighting the need for greater Dalit visibility in key national forums.

Brahmin Leaders from Vindhya Push Claim

Leaders from the Brahmin community in the Vindhya region recently met state Congress president Jitu Patwari and senior leader Umang Singhar. The delegation emphasised the significant influence of Brahmins in the Vindhya belt and pressed for adequate representation through the Rajya Sabha nomination. They pointed to the community's historical association with the Congress and its role in the party's organisational base in the region.

Sindhi Community Enters the Fray

In a fresh development, Dilip Tharwani, general secretary of the Rewa City Congress Committee, has written to Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. In the letter, Tharwani highlighted the long-standing loyalty of the Sindhi community towards the Congress and its consistent contributions to the party's ideology across generations.

He requested that the party consider a deserving candidate from the Sindhi community for the Rajya Sabha seat. Copies of the letter were also marked to Madhya Pradesh Congress in-charge Harish Chaudhary and state president Jitu Patwari. Tharwani, who described himself as a dedicated worker, expressed confidence that a Sindhi representative would effectively raise party policies and public issues in Parliament, further strengthening community ties with the Congress in the state.

Triangular Social Dynamics

The emerging triangular contest—Dalit, Brahmin, and now Sindhi—has added layers to the caste arithmetic within the Madhya Pradesh Congress unit. Party insiders indicate that the high command is closely monitoring these representations while weighing multiple factors, including organisational strength, winnability, and broader social outreach.

Sources familiar with the developments said the party remains committed to inclusive representation but will take a final call keeping in view the overall political strategy for the state.

Impact on Party Unity

Such community-specific demands reflect the Congress's attempt to consolidate support among diverse social groups in Madhya Pradesh, where caste plays a pivotal role in electoral politics. Observers note that handling these aspirations carefully will be crucial for maintaining internal harmony ahead of future electoral battles, including assembly and parliamentary polls.

The Rajya Sabha election for the vacant seats from Madhya Pradesh is expected in the coming weeks, with the party likely to announce its candidate after due consultations at the central level.

What Lies Ahead

The Congress high command is expected to balance these competing claims while ensuring the nominee aligns with the party's larger goal of strengthening its presence in the state. Whether the final choice tilts towards one community or brings in a consensus figure remains to be seen, but the ongoing deliberations underscore the importance of caste considerations in ticket distribution.

When a veteran leader steps back, what follows is almost always a fierce contest for the vacuum left behind. And in Madhya Pradesh Congress, that contest has already begun.

Veteran Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh has announced he will not seek a third term in the Rajya Sabha, with his current six-year tenure set to expire on April 9, 2026. Rewa Riyasat The announcement, delivered almost casually to reporters in Bhopal — "I am vacating my seat" — has set off a scramble inside the Congress that reveals everything about where the party stands today in MP.

Why Digvijaya Singh Is Stepping Back

The trigger, on the surface, was a letter. MP Congress Scheduled Caste Department President Pradeep Ahirwar wrote to Singh urging the party leadership to ensure a representative from the Scheduled Caste community takes the Rajya Sabha seat from MP, citing the need to strengthen Dalit self-respect, political participation, and constitutional values. New Kerala

Singh responded publicly and swiftly — almost too swiftly for a leader of his stature. He has since clarified that he personally requested the Congress high command not to field him for a third consecutive term, and that this decision should not be interpreted as retirement from active politics. IndiaMART

But political watchers are not entirely convinced that this was purely an act of social conscience.

The Pressure Within the Party

Senior political analyst Girija Shankar told Business Standard: "Whenever a leader makes such statements outside the party forum, it should be understood that his voice is no longer being heard within the party as it used to be. Some time ago, BJP's Uma Bharti did something similar." ANI News

This is a significant observation. Digvijaya Singh announcing such a major decision through a press conference — rather than through party channels — signals a leader sending a message upward, not downward.

Congress sources say Singh recently made a presentation at the Congress headquarters in Delhi regarding strengthening the MP Congress at the grassroots level and organisational reforms, with state in-charge Harish Chaudhary, PCC president Jitu Patwari, and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar in attendance. ANI News The fact that he is already positioning himself as a party reformer — while stepping away from the Rajya Sabha — tells you he is not done. He is simply changing lanes.

Who Wants the Seat Now?

Three Rajya Sabha seats are falling vacant in MP. Of these, two are expected to go to the BJP and one to the Congress. Names already circulating include former Chief Minister Kamal Nath, former MPCC president Arun Yadav, current state unit president Jitu Patwari, and several leaders from the SC/ST community. Business Today

This is where the real tension lies. The Congress in MP has been weakened significantly after successive electoral defeats — in the 2023 Assembly polls and the 2024 Lok Sabha results. Every aspirant knows that a Rajya Sabha berth may be their only path to staying politically relevant in the near term.

Singh's own electoral record adds context — he lost Lok Sabha elections in both 2019 and 2024. Amar Ujala The Rajya Sabha was, in many ways, the last institutional platform keeping him at the national table. Voluntarily giving it up — or being nudged to — is a moment that changes the Congress's power equation in MP irreversibly.

What This Means for Dalit Representation

Let us not lose sight of the real, substantive issue buried under the political theatre. As Ahirwar's letter highlighted, nearly 17% of Madhya Pradesh's population belongs to the Scheduled Caste community, and they remain significantly underrepresented in the Upper House. India TV News

Whether Congress actually follows through with an SC nominee — or whether the seat eventually goes to a more established upper-caste leader backed by internal lobbying — will be the true test of the party's commitment to inclusion.

Opinion: Graceful Exit or Forced Retreat?

Digvijaya Singh declared that he has always been active in the state and will keep fighting for people and the party until his last breath. IndiaMART Those are the words of a politician who knows his relevance is being questioned, and is determined to answer the critics through action.

His decision to focus on grassroots party building ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections — still over two years away — is either a smart political pivot or a face-saving retreat from a seat he could no longer hold with certainty. Perhaps both.

What is certain is this: the Rajya Sabha seat battle in MP is now the hottest political contest in central India. Congress's choice will reveal not just who gets the ticket, but what the Grand Old Party truly stands for in 2026 — power or principle.

Some politicians seemingly cannot resist the microphone, even when it is placed directly in front of a landmine. In Madhya Pradesh in March 2026, two public figures have done exactly that — and the political fallout is still echoing through the corridors of Bhopal.

Welcome to another edition of Baat Khari Hai — where we call it as it is.

Pannalal Shakya's 'Prasad' Remark: The Full Story

Guna BJP legislator Pannalal Shakya used objectionable language at a government event in Guna, targeting the District Collector and saying: "Yahan saale hum mandir mein khade hain, humein prasad hi nahin mil raha" — loosely meaning, "We elected representatives are standing in the temple and not even getting our share of prasad."

The remark was made at a press conference alongside Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar, who had gathered reporters to discuss the state budget. When a journalist posed the "selected vs elected" question to Shakya, the MLA used the occasion to fire a public salvo against bureaucrats — the "selected" government servants — claiming they dominate over the "elected" representatives like himself.

On the surface, his frustration may resonate with many elected public representatives across India. The friction between politicians and the IAS bureaucracy is real and well-documented. But the way Shakya chose to express that frustration — with crude language, at a public forum, in front of cameras — is precisely why he is once again in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

Not His First Rodeo — A Pattern of Controversy

Shakya is a two-term BJP MLA from the reserved Guna constituency and is known to be closely associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. ANI News Yet, remarkably, his RSS connection has done little to install ideological discipline in his public speech.

In July 2024, Shakya sparked nationwide controversy when he told an audience at the inauguration of the Prime Minister College of Excellence: "College ki degree se kuch nahi hone wala — ek puncture ki dukaan khol lena" (A college degree won't do much for you — just open a puncture repair shop). ANI News The statement, made while literally standing inside a college his own government had built, baffled both educators and politicians alike.

In September 2025, the party leadership expressed anger at Shakya's statement predicting a civil war-like situation in India, similar to unrest seen in Nepal and Bangladesh. BJP state media cell chief Ashish Agarwal publicly stated the party disagreed with the remarks, and said leadership had taken cognizance of the situation.

Yet here we are again in March 2026. Third controversy. Same MLA. Zero consequences.

The Dhirendra Shastri Connection — Faith, Power, and Political Fire

Into this already charged environment stepped Bageshwar Dham's Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, whose words have a near-miraculous ability to generate political firestorms.

Shastri, born in 1996 in Chhatarpur district, is the current leader of Bageshwar Dham and an influential self-styled godman known for his preaching of the Ramcharitmanas and Shiva Purana. Business Standard He commands a massive following — and an equally massive ability to polarise.

His latest controversial statement has angered leaders across the political spectrum, including senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, veteran Congress strategist Digvijaya Singh, and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. When a single statement manages to unite three otherwise opposing political figures in irritation, you know the remark has crossed a line that most public figures know better than to approach.

The commonality between Shakya's "prasad" remark and Shastri's latest provocation is stark: both are men with significant public platforms, both command the trust and faith of large communities, and both have chosen to deploy that trust recklessly.

Why BJP's "Road Test" Keeps Failing

The BJP had specifically provided training to its legislators on speaking with caution, and when Hemant Khandelwal became state party president, he personally advised lawmakers to avoid controversy-courting statements. But training and advice have had little impact on repeat offenders.

This is the central issue. When there are no real consequences — no suspension, no public censure, no ticket denial — the training means nothing. Shakya has been controversial since 2018 when he suggested that girls should avoid having boyfriends in order to prevent assault. ANI News That was eight years ago. He has since been re-elected, rewarded with the party ticket again in 2023, and has continued making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Opinion: The Road Test Must Have Real Consequences

The "road test" metaphor is apt. In a driving test, if you fail — repeatedly — you don't get the licence. In Indian politics, however, controversy has a bizarre ability to become a career asset rather than a liability.

Shakya's complaint about bureaucrats overriding elected representatives is a legitimate governance debate that deserves serious discussion. Instead, his crude framing has buried that conversation under a pile of outrage. Similarly, Dhirendra Shastri's massive influence could be channelled toward social upliftment — but inflammatory statements transform faith into friction.

Even within Congress, Rahul Gandhi has had to publicly call out Digvijaya Singh's own miscalculated remarks — with Gandhi quipping "you did a mischief" after Singh publicly praised the RSS-BJP organisational structure just before a crucial Congress Working Committee meeting. TheQuint Nobody — across any party — is immune to this problem of speaking first and thinking later.

What This Moment Demands

From the BJP leadership: Clear, enforceable action against repeat offenders — not just press statements of disagreement

From Dhirendra Shastri: An acknowledgment that mass faith comes with mass responsibility

From the media ecosystem: Less amplification of outrage, more interrogation of substance

From voters: Demand accountability at the ballot box, where it matters most

Bottom Line

Madhya Pradesh's political theatre this week has given us a BJP MLA complaining about not getting his "prasad," a godman whose words have angered every major political figure in the state, and yet another reminder that public platforms in India desperately need stronger guardrails.

The road test keeps getting failed. The question is whether anyone in authority is finally ready to cancel the licence.
