The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday moved rapidly after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled anticipatory bail for retired judge Giribala Singh in the high-profile death of 22-year-old Twisha Sharma, officials and sources said, with investigators conducting detailed digital mapping of the accused’s house and questioning her at the residence. According to sources familiar with the probe, Giribala could be arrested any time.

Order and timing

The High Court’s 17-page order, issued late on Wednesday, set aside the anticipatory bail granted earlier by a trial court. The bench observed that given the seriousness of the allegations, the evidence on record and the present stage of the investigation, relief was not warranted. The court noted multiple injury marks on Twisha’s body and said the accused had not offered satisfactory explanations, according to a copy of the order made available to reporters.

CBI activity at scene

A CBI team reached Giribala Singh’s home in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal around 10.30 am on Thursday and began questioning her, officials said. Investigators installed a high-intensity 3D camera inside the residence to take precise measurements and record 360-degree visuals of the first floor and other areas, part of a broader effort to recreate the crime scene and preserve digital evidence.

“Teams are recording the internal layout, the heights of walls and vantage points that could help corroborate statements,” an official involved in the probe said on condition of anonymity. The visuals are being added to the case file as scientific evidence, the source added.

Sequence of events

Twisha, who was married in 2023, died on the night of May 12 and was taken to AIIMS Bhopal, where an initial post-mortem recorded hanging marks and other injuries, the court order said. Police seized mobile phones and a DVR from the house the same day. The trial court had earlier granted anticipatory bail after noting certain WhatsApp messages that primarily complained about the husband and financial transfers into Twisha’s account. That order has now been overturned following a deeper review by the High Court.

Allegations and evidence

Prosecutors and investigating agencies contend WhatsApp chats and statements from Twisha’s family indicate alleged mental harassment, pressure to abort a pregnancy and demands for dowry. The High Court flagged inconsistencies in the defence account and raised concerns about potential attempts to influence the probe, noting public statements that could have tarnished the deceased’s image.

The post-mortem, the court said, found injuries that could not be explained simply as marks sustained while cutting down a body, making custodial interrogation of key accused necessary. The CBI has also been examining call detail records, digital backups and CCTV footage, and is probing whether any footage was tampered with, officials said.

Custody and questioning

Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, remains in CBI remand until May 29 as investigators try to reconstruct his whereabouts on the night of May 12 and reconcile his statements with technical evidence. Sources said the agency is also tracing contacts he had while allegedly absconding and matching his movements with phone records and digital footprints.

Security and ground reaction

Security around Giribala’s home was tightened on Thursday, with additional police personnel deployed in the neighbourhood. Local residents and journalists gathered outside the house; a reporter from a Bhopal daily filed live updates as the CBI proceeded. In a brief sighting on Thursday morning, Giribala was seen outside feeding street dogs, one source said.

What happens next

With anticipatory bail vacated and the CBI actively recording and analysing scene visuals, officials say an arrest could follow if questioning and evidence review point to custodial needs. The agency is expected to seek formal remand if it decides to take Giribala into custody. Court filings and formal charges, if any, will determine the next legal steps.

Investigators stressed that the probe is ongoing and that conclusions will rely on the forensic, digital and circumstantial evidence being assembled. The CBI declined immediate comment; the High Court registry confirmed the order but did not offer further comment beyond the written judgment.

Five-month-old Kashi Dubey Puriya from Ujjain, daughter of a doctor couple, has been diagnosed with rare Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type-1, mirroring the plight of Indore’s Anika. Her parents have appealed to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav for help to arrange the ₹15 crore gene therapy injection unavailable in India.

Symptoms Emerge Early

Kashi was born on November 14, 2025. Within weeks, her parents noticed she lacked normal movement in her limbs. Initial physiotherapy brought no relief, prompting the family to seek specialised care in Bhopal.

Diagnosis at AIIMS Bhopal

Doctors at AIIMS Bhopal clinically suspected SMA Type-1. Blood tests later confirmed the genetic disorder. The infant is now under the supervision of Dr Bhavna Digre, Head of the Medicine Department, where supportive medicines have been started.

Gene Therapy Only Option

Medical experts have indicated that gene therapy remains the sole effective treatment for SMA Type-1. Without it, the condition progressively weakens muscles and can become life-threatening. The family has been told that timely intervention is critical.

Injection Costs ₹15 Crore

The required Zolgensma injection must be imported from abroad. It costs around ₹15 crore and is not yet available in India. The doctor parents, already stretched financially, say the sum is beyond their reach.

Fundraiser Raises 30 Lakh

Dr Rohit Dubey Puriya, a senior resident in the Medicine Department at AIIMS Bhopal, and Dr Prakriti, a gynaecologist who has paused her work at Hamidia Hospital to care for her daughter, have launched an online fundraiser. A charity event also helped. So far, they have collected nearly ₹30 lakh.

Appeal to Chief Minister

The family has directly approached Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav for assistance. They have also urged social organisations, well-wishers and the public to step forward. Sources close to the family said every day counts as the baby’s condition could deteriorate rapidly.

Race Against Time

Grandparents have joined the appeal, describing sleepless nights watching their granddaughter’s struggle. The family stresses that SMA Type-1 leaves little margin for delay. They continue to explore every possible avenue while keeping treatment ongoing at AIIMS Bhopal.

This Ujjain Kashi SMA Type-1 case has once again drawn attention to the challenges families face in accessing advanced therapies for rare diseases in India. Public response and government support could make the difference between hope and despair for the infant.

AIIMS Bhopal Launches Free Clinical Autopsy to Decode Maternal Death Causes in 90 Minutes

AIIMS Bhopal offers free maternal death autopsy to identify scientific causes and improve maternal healthcare outcomes in India.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhopal has introduced a significant initiative aimed at identifying the scientific causes behind maternal deaths. The institute is now offering free pathological, or clinical, autopsies in cases of maternal mortality. This move is expected to play a crucial role in improving the maternal mortality rate in India by uncovering precise medical reasons behind such deaths.

A patient-friendly and dignified process

Unlike conventional postmortems, this clinical autopsy process is entirely non-invasive from a legal standpoint and does not involve police intervention. It is conducted solely based on the written consent of the deceased’s family. The objective is not legal investigation but medical understanding, making the process more respectful and less stressful for grieving families.

The procedure is carried out with utmost dignity. Specialists ensure that only minimal tissue samples required for examination are collected. All organs are carefully restored to their original position after the examination. No visible damage is caused to the face, and the body is respectfully handed back to the family after proper suturing.

Quick and efficient examination

According to the institute, the entire procedure is completed within approximately one and a half hours. Despite its short duration, the process is thorough and scientifically robust. Advanced diagnostic methods are used to ensure accurate findings, helping families gain clarity about the exact cause of death.

Importance of scientific investigation

The findings from histopathology and microbiology reports provide detailed insights into underlying medical conditions or complications that may not have been detected during routine clinical care. This information is vital not only for the family but also for the broader healthcare system.

Such data enables authorities to identify patterns and risk factors associated with maternal deaths. It helps determine which cases could have been prevented with timely intervention, thereby guiding improvements in maternal healthcare services.

Expert perspective on the initiative

Professor Dr. Madhavanand Kar, Executive Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhopal, emphasized that reducing maternal mortality remains a top priority. He noted that clinical autopsies allow medical experts to detect subtle and often overlooked causes of death. These insights can contribute to designing more effective strategies to prevent similar fatalities in the future.

A step toward better maternal healthcare

This initiative reflects a progressive shift in how maternal deaths are studied and addressed in India. By focusing on scientific evidence rather than procedural formalities, the program aims to bridge critical gaps in understanding maternal health risks. In the long run, it is expected to contribute to better policies, improved healthcare delivery, and ultimately, the saving of lives.

AIIMS Bhopal to Launch Lung Transplant Programme on March 28 — Central India's First Government Hospital to Offer All Major Organ Transplants Free of Cost

In a landmark development for public healthcare in Central India, AIIMS Bhopal is set to formally launch its lung transplant programme on March 28, 2026 — making it the first and only government hospital in the region to offer heart, kidney, bone marrow, and lung transplants all under one roof, and entirely free of cost.

This is not merely a medical milestone — it is a transformational moment for millions of patients across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and neighbouring states who have long been forced to travel to distant metro cities and pay lakhs at private hospitals for life-saving organ transplants.

What Makes This Launch So Significant?

With the regulatory site inspection now complete and final government approval imminent, AIIMS Bhopal is days away from becoming the only government hospital in Central India to offer heart, kidney, bone marrow, and lung transplants — all under one roof and entirely free of cost for eligible patients.

AIIMS Bhopal's entry into lung transplants is the next step in a transplant programme that has been steadily expanding since 2024. In January 2025, the institute performed Madhya Pradesh's first successful heart transplant — a landmark procedure that demonstrated its capacity to handle the most complex organ transplant operations. To date, AIIMS Bhopal has completed 3 heart transplants and 17 kidney transplants, building a strong foundation of transplant expertise.

The regulatory process is nearly complete. The inspection team has examined the infrastructure, operation theatres, ICU capacity, post-transplant care protocols, and the qualifications of the surgical team. Minor deficiencies identified during the inspection have since been addressed, and the institute now awaits the final official permission before performing its first lung transplant procedure.

A Broader Infrastructure Overhaul Underway

The lung transplant launch is only one piece of a much larger transformation at AIIMS Bhopal. The institute is set to install Gamma Knife and PET Scan machines, strengthen organ transplant services, and build a new dedicated ICU block. Robotic surgery facilities are also being expanded, enabling patients to receive cutting-edge treatments without leaving Madhya Pradesh.

A dedicated transplant operation theatre — separate from general surgical OTs and designed specifically for the sterile, infection-controlled environment that organ transplants demand — is being commissioned this year. This will allow heart, liver, kidney, and lung transplants to be performed under optimal conditions, with reduced waiting times and improved infection management.

India's Transplant Expansion: Other States Catching Up

AIIMS Bhopal is part of a national wave of organ transplant expansion across India's government hospitals. Several AIIMS campuses and state medical institutions — including in Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Puducherry — have either recently launched or significantly expanded their liver and organ transplant programmes under central government guidance.

Teams from leading transplant institutions have trained surgeons and medical staff at multiple public sector hospitals across the country, helping start and restart liver transplant programmes that had previously been unavailable outside major private hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai.

Yet the numbers reveal how much ground remains to be covered. Lung transplants are currently limited to just 11 states across India, while heart transplants are available in only 14 states — indicating that these procedures are still largely restricted to states with the most advanced healthcare infrastructure.

What This Means for Patients

The impact of AIIMS Bhopal's expansion is deeply human. When the institute performs its first lung transplant, it will mean that one of medicine's most complex and life-giving procedures is within reach of a farmer from Vidisha, a coal miner from Korba, or a textile worker from Indore — all of them equally entitled to the chance at a second life that a lung transplant represents.

India's organ transplant demand far outpaces supply:

An estimated 2 lakh patients die of liver failure or liver cancer annually in India, a significant portion of whom could be saved with a timely transplant.

Around 50,000 people suffer from end-stage heart failure every year, yet only a small fraction ever receive transplants.

Deceased organ donation rates in India remain critically low, making awareness and system-building more urgent than ever.

AIIMS Bhopal's model — offering all major transplants free of charge at a government institution — sets a precedent that other AIIMS campuses and state medical colleges are now looking to replicate. With leading institutions in Delhi, Bhubaneswar, and now Bhopal active in the transplant space, the architecture of accessible organ transplantation in India is being rebuilt from the ground up.

The AIIMS Bhopal lung transplant launch on March 28, 2026 is a defining chapter in India's public healthcare story.

In a story that blends elite sport, rare medicine, and a quiet public health crisis, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal has successfully performed a rare surgical procedure on an Asian Games athlete suffering from cryptorchidism — a condition medically known as "hidden testes" or undescended testes. It is a condition that affects millions of boys in India but is rarely discussed openly because of deep-rooted social stigma.

This AIIMS Bhopal hidden testes surgery is not just a medical milestone. It is a much-needed spotlight on a condition that, if left untreated, can lead to infertility, testicular cancer, and severe hormonal complications — yet remains largely undiagnosed and untreated across rural and semi-urban India.

What Is Cryptorchidism — The Condition That Hid in Plain Sight

Cryptorchidism literally means "hidden or obscure testis" and refers to an undescended or maldescended testis — one of the most common genital problems encountered in pediatric medicine.

In simple terms, during a baby boy's development inside the womb, the testes are formed inside the abdomen. They are supposed to travel from the abdomen, down through the groin, and into the scrotum during the third trimester. When they fail to complete this descent, the condition is called undescended testes.

At birth, approximately 3–5% of boys have undescended testes, and a large majority of these may descend naturally within the first 3 to 4 months of life. Outlook India However, when they do not, medical intervention becomes critical. The tragedy is that in India, many cases go undetected simply because parents are too embarrassed to raise the issue with a doctor.

The Asian Games Athlete — A Story of Hidden Pain and Hidden Courage

The young athlete operated on at AIIMS Bhopal had represented India at the Asian Games — competing at the highest continental level while unknowingly living with a medical condition that posed serious long-term health risks. His case was detected through routine medical examination, a reminder that even elite sports programmes in India still have critical gaps in comprehensive healthcare screening.

AIIMS Bhopal's Urology Department offers specialised treatment for congenital anomalies including undescended testes in both pediatric and adult patients, ensuring proper development and functionality. Bhopal Samachar The department, attended by over 45,000 patients annually including close to 8,400 new cases, and conducting more than 800 major surgeries each year, Bhopal Samachar is one of central India's most capable centres for exactly this kind of complex case.

The surgery — called orchiopexy — involves locating the undescended testicle and surgically repositioning it into the scrotum. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Most patients can expect a brief recovery period with mild discomfort or swelling in the surgical area.

Why Delayed Treatment Is Dangerous

What makes this case particularly significant is the athlete's age. Most experts strongly recommend surgery within the first year of life. Early recognition and surgical repair before one year of age remain the most important intervention to reduce the negative long-term impact of both unilateral and bilateral cryptorchidism.

When surgery is delayed — as it often is in India due to unawareness, poverty, or stigma — the consequences compound over time:

Infertility risk: The warmer temperatures inside the body may impair the development of the testicles and affect the production of healthy sperm when the boy grows older.

Cancer risk: Undescended testicles are at an increased risk for testicular cancer — studies show the risk is almost 35 times higher compared to the general population, typically occurring in the thirties.

Torsion risk: Testicular torsion — where the blood vessels bringing blood to and from the testes get twisted — is another dangerous complication linked to undescended testes.

For a national-level athlete, the stakes are even higher. Hormonal balance, physical endurance, and reproductive health are all directly tied to testicular function. That this athlete continued competing at the Asian Games level despite the condition is both remarkable and concerning.

India's Silent Epidemic Nobody Talks About

Despite more than a century of research, many aspects of cryptorchidism remain controversial and not well defined — and untreated cryptorchidism clearly has deleterious effects on the testis over time.

In India, the problem is compounded by silence. Families in smaller towns and villages rarely seek urological evaluation for their children. Any abnormality related to sex organs arouses tremendous social and cultural issues, and it is imperative that children with this common problem receive the best and timely therapy.

The AIIMS Bhopal case, by becoming public, chips away at that wall of silence. When a celebrated athlete openly undergoes this procedure, it sends a powerful message to thousands of families across Madhya Pradesh and India: this is a treatable medical condition, not a source of shame.

What Parents and Families Must Do

Medical experts recommend the following steps:

At birth: Check whether both testes are present in the scrotum. If either is missing, consult a pediatric urologist immediately

By 6 months: If testes have not descended naturally, referral for surgical evaluation is essential

Do not delay beyond 12–18 months: The main treatment for cryptorchidism is orchidopexy, and the widely accepted recommendation is that it should be performed between 6 and 12 months of age, but not beyond 18 months TheQuint

For adults with undiagnosed cases: AIIMS Bhopal and other major hospitals offer evaluation and surgical treatment — it is never entirely too late to seek help

Opinion: Sport Gave a Young Man His Diagnosis — Now Let It Give Others Awareness

There is an irony in the story of this Asian Games athlete. His remarkable physical achievements — the discipline, the training, the competition — likely contributed to the medical screening that finally identified his condition. Most Indian boys with cryptorchidism will never receive that screening.

India's sports infrastructure, still growing, must integrate comprehensive medical screening as a non-negotiable standard. And India's public health conversation must make space for conditions like cryptorchidism — stripping away the stigma so that families feel comfortable seeking early intervention.

AIIMS Bhopal performed a surgery. But the real operation needed in India is on awareness.
