Anti-Infiltration Drive Intensifies in West Bengal, 26 Bangladeshi Nationals Detained

Women and children among detainees housed at Jalpaiguri holding centre as authorities continue verification process

A special holding centre in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district has become the focus of an ongoing anti-infiltration operation after 26 Bangladeshi nationals were detained and brought to the facility as part of a statewide verification drive. Authorities say the individuals were identified during recent enforcement operations targeting illegal immigration and are currently being housed at a secured centre in Phatapukur under Rajganj block.

According to administrative sources, the detainees were transported from the Islampur region of North Dinajpur district on Thursday. The group includes 15 women and seven children, prompting officials to balance security measures with humanitarian considerations while legal and identity verification procedures continue.

The development comes amid intensified efforts by state and central agencies to identify individuals allegedly residing in India without valid documentation and to verify their citizenship status through established legal procedures.

Detainees Shifted from North Dinajpur

Officials said the group was brought to the Phatapukur holding centre following a verification exercise conducted in parts of North Bengal. Preliminary findings suggest that the individuals may have entered India illegally several years ago and had subsequently settled in different areas of West Bengal.

Administrative sources indicated that many of those detained were reportedly engaged in informal occupations, including daily wage labour, painting work, and rickshaw pulling. Authorities are currently examining documents and conducting identity verification to establish the exact circumstances of their stay in the country.

The verification process is expected to determine the next course of legal action.

Security Measures Strengthened

Security around the holding centre has been significantly enhanced following the arrival of the detainees. The facility has been secured with high barricades, while surveillance systems have been installed to monitor activities within and around the premises.

Officials confirmed that CCTV cameras are operational throughout the facility and that access remains strictly controlled. Police personnel, civic volunteers, and central security forces have been deployed round the clock to maintain law and order.

Authorities said the enhanced security arrangements are intended to ensure the safe management of the facility while legal proceedings remain underway.

Focus on Women and Children

With a significant number of women and children among those detained, officials have emphasized that adequate arrangements have been made to meet their basic needs.

According to administrative sources, accommodation, food, sanitation facilities, and essential services are being provided inside the holding centre. Authorities have stated that special attention is being given to vulnerable individuals while they remain under administrative supervision.

The detainees are expected to stay at the centre until verification procedures and related legal formalities are completed.

Verification and Legal Process Underway

Officials have not yet announced a final decision regarding the future status of the detainees. However, sources indicated that the matter is being handled in accordance with applicable laws and established procedures governing foreign nationals and border management.

Identity verification remains the primary focus at this stage. Authorities are examining documents, conducting background checks, and coordinating with relevant agencies before determining any further action.

Administrative officials stressed that all steps will be taken in accordance with legal requirements and due process.

Possible Coordination with Border Agencies

Sources familiar with the process indicated that, following completion of verification, coordination with border management authorities could take place if required under existing legal frameworks.

The Border Security Force (BSF) may become involved in subsequent stages depending on the outcome of identity checks and administrative review. Officials, however, have not issued any formal statement regarding future transfers or repatriation-related procedures.

Public Interest and Administrative Response

The development has drawn attention from local residents, particularly given the heightened security presence around the holding centre. Authorities have appealed to the public to avoid speculation and rely only on official information regarding the case.

The Phatapukur facility has emerged as an important administrative centre during the ongoing anti-infiltration drive, reflecting broader efforts by government agencies to verify the status of suspected foreign nationals and maintain updated records.

TMC Leaders Return Alleged Bribe Money as Bengal Welfare Scam Allegations Deepen

Cash-for-benefits allegations have triggered political controversy across West Bengal, with local TMC leaders returning money to villagers while fresh questions emerge over irregularities in welfare scheme beneficiary lists.

The controversy surrounding alleged cash-for-benefits collections under government welfare schemes in West Bengal has intensified, with several local leaders linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) returning money to beneficiaries amid mounting public pressure and administrative scrutiny.

The issue has surfaced across multiple districts, including Cooch Behar, Murshidabad, Nadia and South 24 Parganas, where residents have accused local political functionaries of demanding money in exchange for facilitating access to housing and welfare scheme benefits.

Money Returned In Villages

In parts of Cooch Behar district, local leaders reportedly began returning money that had allegedly been collected as commission or "cut money" from beneficiaries. In the Ghughumari area, announcements were made through loudspeakers informing residents that the money would be returned.

A similar development was reported from Subhashpally in Mathabhanga, where commission allegedly collected from 14 beneficiaries of a housing scheme was returned. Local residents said the move came after increasing demands for accountability from villagers.

At Fakirer Kuthi under Pachgarh Gram Panchayat, booth president Tapan De reportedly handed back money to several villagers during a public gathering at a local school ground, a development that quickly drew political attention in the district.

Arrest In Murshidabad

The controversy took a more serious turn in Murshidabad district, where police arrested village deputy chief Sirajul Sheikh following complaints from residents of Nutangram.

According to villagers, amounts ranging between ₹5,000 and ₹15,000 were allegedly collected from beneficiaries under the Banglar Awas Yojana. After complaints were lodged, local authorities initiated action, leading to the arrest.

Officials have not publicly disclosed further details regarding the investigation, but the case has added to concerns over the implementation of welfare schemes at the grassroots level.

Namkhana Case Raises Questions

In Namkhana of South 24 Parganas district, money allegedly collected in the name of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was also returned to villagers.

Gram Panchayat member Madhab Chandra Laya claimed he voluntarily returned ₹5,000 each to 45 villagers. He further alleged that the collections were made under political pressure and that senior panchayat functionaries and local leaders were aware of the practice.

No formal police complaint has been filed in connection with the allegations in Namkhana so far.

Irregularities In Lakshmir Bhandar

Separate concerns have emerged from Nadia district regarding the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, a flagship welfare programme intended for women beneficiaries.

Authorities found 173 men listed as beneficiaries in Dhubulia despite the scheme's eligibility criteria. Officials confirmed that funds had been withdrawn through these accounts between February and recent months before the discrepancy was identified.

District Magistrate Srikanta Palli said an inquiry was conducted and the names were subsequently removed from the beneficiary database.

The development has reignited debate over beneficiary verification mechanisms and data monitoring within welfare programmes.

Probe Commission Constituted

Amid the growing controversy, the state government on May 18 constituted an Institutional Commission to investigate allegations relating to cut-money practices, misuse of government funds and financial irregularities.

The commission will be headed by retired judge Bishwajit Basu. State authorities have indicated that citizens will be able to submit complaints directly once the commission becomes fully operational.

Officials believe the mechanism could provide a structured platform for examining grievances linked to welfare schemes and local governance.

Political Sparring Continues

The allegations have triggered sharp exchanges between the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

BJP leaders have accused local TMC functionaries of coercing villagers into making payments to access government benefits. They allege that beneficiaries were warned they could face delays or denial of services if they refused to pay.

The TMC, however, has distanced itself from the allegations. Party leaders in Cooch Behar said the organisation does not support any form of illegal collection and maintained that any individual found guilty would be personally accountable for their actions.

With investigations underway and political scrutiny intensifying, the cash-for-benefits controversy is likely to remain a significant issue in West Bengal's local governance and welfare administration landscape in the coming weeks.

Falta Assembly bypoll sees moderate early turnout amid heavy security as repolling gets underway in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district.

Polling is underway for the much-awaited repoll in the Falta Assembly constituency in West Bengal on Thursday, with authorities reporting a voter turnout of 20.47 per cent till 9 am. Voting began at 7 am across 285 polling stations and is scheduled to continue till 6 pm.

The Election Commission of India has significantly ramped up security measures for the exercise. Officials have doubled the deployment, placing eight security personnel at each booth compared to four during the original polling on April 29.

Heightened Security and Preparations

Local authorities confirmed that the additional forces were deployed following complaints of irregularities during the initial round of voting. The move aims to ensure free and fair polling in a constituency that has witnessed tension in recent weeks.

Polling stations opened on time, with voters seen queuing up in several areas from early morning. Election officials said the process was proceeding smoothly in the initial hours, though they remained vigilant.

Why Repolling Was Ordered

The Election Commission had ordered fresh polling in Falta after receiving multiple complaints on April 29. Reports emerged from several booths alleging that tape was pasted over the BJP symbol on the EVMs, potentially affecting voter choice. There were also claims of EVM malfunctioning at multiple locations.

The then observer, Subrata Gupta, visited the constituency and conducted an on-ground inquiry. Evidence of tampering was reportedly found in at least 60 booths. Additionally, attempts to manipulate webcam footage at some polling stations came to light during the investigation.

These developments prompted the Commission to announce repolling to restore voter confidence in the democratic process.

TMC Candidate Withdraws, Symbol Remains

The contest in Falta remains primarily between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, though the dynamics shifted recently. TMC candidate Jahangir Khan announced his withdrawal from the race just two days ago on May 18. However, his name and the party’s symbol will continue to appear on the EVMs, as the withdrawal came after the nomination process had concluded.

A total of six candidates are in the fray for this repoll.

Political History of Falta Seat

Falta has traditionally been a tough battleground. Once considered a CPI(M) stronghold, the seat shifted towards the Trinamool Congress, which first won it in 2001. After a brief CPI(M) comeback in 2006, TMC has held the seat continuously since 2011. Notably, the BJP is yet to register a victory here.

In the broader South 24 Parganas district, which has 31 Assembly seats, the BJP made notable gains in the last elections, winning 10 seats outside of Falta. The party succeeded in both rural pockets like Sagar, Kakdwip, and Gosaba, as well as urban segments such as Jadavpur, Tollygunge, and Behala. TMC, however, retained strongholds including Basanti, Kultali, and Raidighi.

Public Interest and Next Steps

The repoll in Falta has drawn considerable attention across the state, coming just weeks after the main Assembly election phase. The final results for this seat are expected to be declared on May 24 along with other pending counts.

Voters in the area expressed mixed reactions, with some hoping for a smoother process this time. Local residents said issues like EVM credibility had created some scepticism, making the repoll an important test for restoring faith in the electoral machinery.

Officials urged voters to exercise their franchise peacefully and assured all necessary arrangements were in place to prevent any untoward incidents. Monitoring teams and senior observers are stationed in the constituency to oversee the proceedings till the end of polling.

As the day progresses, turnout figures are expected to rise steadily. The Election Commission will continue to release periodic updates on voter participation throughout the day.

Ganga Sagar Snan will be observed on Friday, January 15, 2027, drawing thousands of Hindu pilgrims to Sagar Island in West Bengal for one of the most significant ritual bathing events associated with Makar Sankranti. The annual observance, widely known as Ganga Sagar Snan, holds deep religious importance as devotees gather to take a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga River and the Bay of Bengal, a site traditionally believed to be capable of washing away sins and granting spiritual liberation.

According to the Hindu calendar, the Makar Sankranti moment in 2027 will occur on January 14 at 09:06 PM, while the auspicious window for Ganga Sagar Snan begins early on January 15. The most favourable time to take the holy dip is between 05:38 AM and 07:14 AM, coinciding with sunrise rituals. Sunrise is expected at 07:14 AM, while sunset will occur at 05:57 PM. These timings are considered crucial for devotees performing Ganga Sagar Snan, as the early morning bath during the sacred period is believed to maximise spiritual benefits.

As per traditional practices, Ganga Sagar Snan is not only a ritual bath but also a large-scale religious gathering that transforms Sagar Island, also known as Sagardweep, into a major pilgrimage centre. The event attracts devotees from across India and abroad, who arrive days in advance to participate in prayers, rituals, and the holy dip. The gathering is also known as Ganga Sagar Mela, which continues for several days, beginning before Makar Sankranti and extending beyond the main bathing day.

Devotees observing Ganga Sagar Snan typically begin their day in the early hours, often around 3 AM, by performing prayers dedicated to Saint Kapil Muni. The Kapil Muni Temple on Sagar Island remains a central spiritual point during the observance, where pilgrims offer prayers before proceeding to the river confluence. After temple rituals, devotees take part in yajna and maha puja ceremonies conducted in the area, marking the formal beginning of the sacred bathing process.

The holy dip during Ganga Sagar Snan is performed with deep reverence, as devotees immerse themselves in the waters while chanting prayers and seeking blessings from Goddess Ganga and Lord Surya. It is also customary to offer arghya to the rising sun, symbolising gratitude and spiritual awakening. Many pilgrims observe strict fasting on this day, refraining from food and water until the completion of the rituals, reflecting their devotion and discipline during Ganga Sagar Snan.

The significance of Ganga Sagar Snan is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and scriptures, which describe the merging of the Ganga River with the sea at Sagar Island as a highly sacred point. According to belief, the ritual bath performed during Ganga Sagar Snan leads to purification from past sins and helps devotees attain moksha, or liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth. This belief continues to be a driving force behind the massive turnout every year, making it one of the largest religious congregations in India after the Kumbh Mela.

In addition to its spiritual importance, Ganga Sagar Snan also reflects the cultural and social unity of Hindu traditions. The mela brings together people from diverse regions, languages, and backgrounds, all united by shared faith and devotion. Temporary facilities, camps, and arrangements are set up by local authorities to manage the influx of pilgrims, ensuring safety, transport, and basic amenities during the peak days of Ganga Sagar Snan.

Security and administrative preparations are typically intensified ahead of the event, given the large number of pilgrims expected to arrive. Authorities coordinate with local bodies to regulate movement, manage ferry services to Sagar Island, and ensure crowd control during peak bathing hours. Medical camps and emergency services are also deployed to assist pilgrims participating in Ganga Sagar Snan, especially given the early morning cold conditions during January.

The ritual importance of Ganga Sagar Snan extends beyond the act of bathing, encompassing charity, devotion, and spiritual reflection. Devotees often engage in donations, including food, clothing, and monetary offerings, as part of their religious observance. These acts of giving are considered highly auspicious during Ganga Sagar Snan and are believed to multiply spiritual merit.

A fresh claim has surfaced in the killing of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant Chandranath Rath, with initial investigation pointing to a “planned hit” carried out by hired shooters on Wednesday night. Police have since recovered a second motorcycle believed to have been used in the attack.

The 42-year-old was shot multiple times around 10:30 pm while returning home from Kolkata to Madhyamgram. Three suspects have been detained for questioning, though no formal arrests have been made yet.

Second Bike Recovered Near Rail Gate

The additional motorcycle was found late Thursday night near the No. 11 rail gate area in Barasat. According to officials familiar with the investigation, the bike had reportedly been stolen earlier from the Dumdum neighbourhood. Multiple police teams are now working to trace the sequence of movement before and after the shooting.

A Pattern of Loss for the BJP Leader

This is not the first time Suvendu Adhikari has lost someone from his inner circle. Over the past 13 years, three close aides have died under circumstances that have raised questions.

In 2013, when Suvendu was still with the Trinamool Congress, his private assistant Pradeep Jha passed away. Investigators then termed it a natural death. Five years later, in 2018, his personal security officer Subhrata Chakraborty was found dead in what police ruled a suicide. Then in 2021, another personal assistant, Pulak Lahiri, also died in unusual circumstances.

MLA Was on Call When Shots Were Fired

A striking detail has emerged from the night of the murder. BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh has claimed that he was speaking to Chandranath on the phone when the attack happened.

“We were discussing the upcoming swearing-in ceremony. Suddenly, I heard gunshots over the phone, followed by someone groaning in pain. The call got disconnected,” Ghosh told reporters. He said he tried calling back repeatedly but there was no response. When someone finally answered, an unknown person informed him that Chandranath had been shot dead.

A 90-Minute Timeline of the Attack

Around 9 pm, Chandranath left Kolkata in a Scorpio SUV, seated beside the driver. At approximately 9:58 pm, CCTV cameras in Madhyamgram captured the vehicle passing through. Shortly after, another car and two motorcycles carrying three individuals were seen following it.

By 10:30 pm, near Doharia Junction, the car overtook the Scorpio and stopped in front of it, forcing the driver to halt. Before anyone could react, bike-borne attackers approached from the left and fired between six to ten rounds. Two bullets hit Chandranath in the chest, one in the abdomen.

The assailants then abandoned the car at the spot and fled on motorcycles using two separate routes. Police later found the car’s registration number was fake, and the chassis number had been tampered with.

Glock 47X Pistol Used in Killing

Officials have confirmed that the attackers used a Glock 47X pistol, a modern weapon not typically seen in ordinary criminal cases. “The manner of the attack suggests it was executed by professional shooters,” a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity.

From Air Force to Politics

Chandranath was not a career politician from the start. He served as an Air Force officer before taking voluntary retirement, then worked in the corporate sector for some time. He had been associated with Suvendu Adhikari since his Trinamool Congress days and was considered one of his most trusted aides. He officially joined Suvendu’s team in 2019 and later handled his election campaign in Bhabanipur — the same seat where Suvendu defeated Mamata Banerjee by around 15,000 votes.

Those who knew him describe Chandranath as calm and low-profile, someone who stayed away from the limelight despite years of close association with a high-profile leader.

Investigations remain ongoing. Police have not ruled out political motives.

Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead late Wednesday night on National Highway 12 near Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district. Police said the attackers had been tracking his movements for at least a week before intercepting his vehicle and firing at close range.

The incident occurred around 11:30 pm when Rath was travelling in a Scorpio towards Siliguri. Near the Doharia area on Jessore Road, bike-borne assailants surrounded the vehicle and opened fire. The driver and two others were also injured.

Eight to fifteen rounds

Initial reports suggested four rounds were fired. But police later revised the count to 8-10 rounds. Hospital sources, however, told reporters that post-mortem examination suggested up to 15-16 bullet injuries. A three-member medical team led by Dr Kallol Ray has been constituted for the autopsy.

Rath sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and head. He was declared brought dead at a nearby hospital.

Movement tracked for a week

Police analysis of CCTV footage from key roads revealed the attackers had monitored Rath’s daily routine meticulously — the routes he took, the vehicle he used, and even the seat he occupied inside the car.

“The assailants knew exactly when and where to intercept him,” an official familiar with the probe said.

Kolkata Police have so far collected footage from eight CCTV cameras. State DGP Siddhinath Gupta is personally reviewing the visuals. A Special Investigation Team is being formed.

Political fallout

BJP workers staged a blockade on NH-12 overnight, demanding an encounter of the attackers. Party spokesperson Keya Ghosh appealed for calm but alleged that back-office BJP workers were being deliberately targeted. “The BJP envisions a government of change, not revenge,” she said.

BJP leader Rakesh Singh went further, demanding the arrest of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party leader Abhishek Banerjee. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata later today.

TMC demands court-monitored CBI probe

In an unexpected move, the Trinamool Congress condemned the killing and demanded a CBI inquiry under court supervision. “We demand strict action. The killing of other BJP and TMC workers should also be investigated,” the party said in a statement.

Mother alleges political motive

Hasirani Rath, the victim’s mother, demanded life imprisonment for the killers. “I do not want them hanged, I want life imprisonment,” she said, alleging her son was targeted for political reasons linked to Adhikari’s electoral victory over Banerjee.

Separate shooting same night

About an hour after Rath’s killing, a BJP worker named Rohit Roy was shot and critically injured in Basirhat district. Over the last two days, at least five political workers — two from the BJP and three from the TMC — have reportedly been killed in the state.

A special session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly has been called for May 25.

Basically, as they marched through a crowded street, blasting music and shouting slogans, a Muslim funeral procession needed to pass. The organizers didn’t hesitate. They cut the music and cleared the way for the cortege. People nearby said the scene really highlighted Bengal’s centuries-old mix of cultures, what’s often called "Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb."

One local—who watched it happen—said, “Politics matters, but honoring the departed comes first.” Honestly, this gesture stood out, especially with all the tension swirling around after the heated state elections. Moments like this, showing basic respect and harmony, rarely make headlines when the political drama takes center stage. But they speak volumes about what actually happens on the ground.

Amit Shah Slams Mamata Banerjee on Bengal Infiltration: 'Cannot Stop It, Poses National Security Threat'

In a fiery address ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has escalated his attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of enabling unchecked infiltration across the state's porous borders. Labeling it a "national security threat" rather than a mere local issue, Shah's remarks come at a time when political tensions are boiling over, with the BJP positioning itself as the sole guardian of Bengal's sovereignty and cultural heritage.

Shah's Scathing Critique of TMC Rule

During a press conference in Kolkata on Tuesday, Shah painted a grim picture of the 15-year TMC Government reign, claiming it has stalled development and fostered fear among residents. "Bengal's progress is dead under TMC's syndicate raj," he declared, pointing to stalled central schemes meant to eradicate poverty. With the Modi government's welfare initiatives hitting roadblocks in the state, Shah urged voters to back BJP for a "Bangla Gaurav" revival.

The timing couldn't be more critical. As India grapples with border security amid global migration pressures, Shah's visit underscores the BJP's strategy to rally nationalist sentiments in Bengal, where infiltration has long been a flashpoint. Experts like political analyst Dr. Rajat Roy note, "This narrative taps into rising anxieties post-2024 Lok Sabha polls, where BJP's vote share surged to 39% from 17% in 2014. It's a calculated move to consolidate Hindu and Matua votes."

Infiltration: From State Woe to National Crisis

At the heart of Shah's broadside is Amit Shah Bengal Infiltration – a persistent issue he says Mamata Banerjee "cannot stop." He revealed writing seven letters to the CM for land to build border fencing, yet progress lags behind states like Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. "Why is infrastructure stalled only here?" Shah questioned, highlighting three failed visits by the Union Home Secretary.

- Security Implications: Illegal entries threaten demographics and resources, per Shah. "Only BJP can seal borders so tight, not even birds cross."

- Electoral Stakes: The 2026 Bengal Elections hinge on this, with Shah predicting a "landslide victory" to expel infiltrators.

- Cultural Erosion: Unchecked flows risk diluting Bengal's legacy of Vivekananda and Tagore, he warned.

This isn't just rhetoric; it's a call to action. Voters in border districts like Malda and Murshidabad report heightened community vigilantism, signaling grassroots mobilization against perceived appeasement politics.

Attacks on Corruption, Women's Safety, and Administration

Shah didn't hold back on other fronts. He flagged TMC's "extreme appeasement" as irreversible damage, accused the regime of corruption and administrative paralysis, and slammed violations in appointing key officials like the Chief Secretary. On women's safety – a hot-button issue – he cited horrors at RG Kar Hospital, Sandeshkhali, and beyond, criticizing advice for women to avoid nights out post-7 PM.

For the Matua Community, long awaiting citizenship clarity, Shah offered reassurance: "Refugees in Bengal are Indians; BJP guarantees it." This outreach could sway a pivotal bloc in the upcoming polls.

Why This Matters Now: A Crossroads for Bengal

As factional rifts simmer within BJP and center-state frictions peak, Shah's three-day tour – starting with an organizational meet at Salt Lake – signals all-out war for 2026. With vote shares flipping dramatically, Bengal stands at a crossroads: continued TMC "syndicate rule" or BJP's promised nationalist reset?

Practical takeaway for readers: Monitor border policy debates; engage in voter forums to demand transparency. As Dr. Roy advises, "Informed citizens can tip the scales – this election is about identity, not just seats."

In conclusion, Amit Shah Bengal Infiltration has thrust national security into Bengal's electoral spotlight. Whether BJP delivers on its vows remains to be seen, but one thing's clear: the battle for Bengal's soul is fiercer than ever.
