What is the Cholistan Canal Project?

The Indus River is considered the lifeline of Pakistan. The Pakistan government and the army have started the 'Cholistan Canal Project' to take the water of the Indus River to the Cholistan desert of Punjab so that the land of the Cholistan desert can be made suitable for farming. Under this project, six canals of 176 kilometers are to be built.

What is PAK's intention behind the Cholistan Canal Project?

Actually, the real motive of Pakistan behind the Cholistan Canal Project is to stop the water going to Sindh province. People from Punjab dominate the government, army and administration of Pakistan. The attitude of the rulers of Pakistan towards provinces like Sindh and Balochistan has always been indifferent and of secondary importance.

This is the reason why the intention of the Pakistan government and army is to stop the water available to the people of Sindh in the southern province itself. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Asim Munir together have hurriedly given the green signal to the Cholistan Canal Project. However, experts are also raising questions on this project.

Why is the project being opposed?

In Sindh province, agriculture, farmers and livelihood of millions of people depend on the Indus River. Punjab will benefit from the Cholistan Canal Project, but Sindh will not get its share of water.

That is, if the water of Sindh river is diverted to Punjab, there can be water shortage in Sindh province, drought can occur, which can ruin their agriculture and crops. People can crave for drinking water and gradually Sindh, which is currently green, can become a desert.
The lifestyle of the people of Sindh will be affected by the Cholistan Canal Project. That is why the farmers, common people, political parties, religious organizations, lawyers and social workers are opposing this project. People of Sindh took to the streets to stop this project.
It is being said that Sindh province will also get the flood water of Sutlej. Experts say that increasing dependence on flood water will be the biggest mistake of the Pakistan government.
How much will the project cost?
The Cholistan Canal Project is in the South Punjab province of Pakistan. This area is adjacent to Rajasthan of India. In this project, a 176 km long canal will be built and its three sub-canals will also be built.
The water storage capacity of this project will be 4,120 cusecs. This canal will be completed at a cost of about 67 billion rupees (Indian currency).
