Muharram 2025: Know the date of Ashura, holiday status and religious significance

The Islamic New Year begins with the month of Muharram and the 10th date of this month i.e. Ashura has special religious significance.

On this day, Imam Hussain (Razi), who was the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH), was martyred fighting against injustice and oppression in the battle of Karbala.

Consensus has been reached on this date (Muharram 2025)

The sighting of the moon in India took place on June 26, on the basis of which 1 Muharram was on Friday, June 27, 2025. In such a situation, the date of 10 Muharram, i.e. Ashura will fall on Sunday, July 6, 2025. This is the consensus regarding the date of Muharram in most states of India. However, in some countries, the sighting of the moon happened a day later, so Ashura can be celebrated there on July 7.

When will the holiday be in India? (Muharram 2025)
Muharram is a gazetted public holiday in India. Usually schools, colleges, government offices, banks and stock markets remain closed on this day. But since this time Ashura is falling on Sunday, a separate holiday has not been declared in many states.

Religious events (Muharram 2025)
The Shia Muslim community organizes mourning, Tazia processions and majlises on this day to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. At the same time, Sunni Muslims observe fast and consider it a day of self-purification.
