‘3 Idiots’ Sequel Script Locked; Aamir, Madhavan, Sharman to Reunite Under Rajkumar Hirani’s Direction

More than 15 years after 3 Idiots became a defining blockbuster of Indian cinema, its long-speculated sequel is finally moving forward. According to a report by Pinkvilla, the script for the sequel has been finalised, bringing back Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Rajkumar Hirani will return to direct, while Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and Aamir Khan are set to jointly produce the film.

The report states that filming is expected to begin in the second half of 2026. A source cited in the report said the team is confident that the new script carries “the magic of the first film,” describing it as equally entertaining, emotional, and impactful.

The sequel will pick up from the conclusion of the 2009 film, where Rancho, Farhan, and Raju part ways before discovering Rancho’s true identity. “After about 15 years, the characters meet again and embark on a new adventure,” the source said, indicating that the narrative will explore how their lives have evolved since their college days.

Hirani, who had been contemplating a follow-up for years, reportedly committed fully to developing the screenplay only after finding a concept that lived up to the original. “He already had an idea for this sequel, but he only wanted to make it if the story matched the legacy of the first film,” the source added.

Meanwhile, Hirani and Aamir Khan have temporarily set aside their planned biopic on cinema pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke, citing dissatisfaction with the script’s current draft.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots became one of India’s biggest box-office successes, collecting around ₹400 crore worldwide on a budget of approximately ₹55 crore. Its enduring popularity, cultural influence, and memorable characters have sustained demand for a sequel a demand that now appears close to being met.
