‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ Returns Empty-Handed from International Emmys Despite Double Nominations

Imtiaz Ali’s Netflix biographical drama Amar Singh Chamkila failed to secure a win at the 53rd International Emmy Awards, despite entering the competition with two high-profile nominations. The ceremony, held Monday night in New York City, saw the film nominated in the Best TV Movie/Mini-Series category, while lead actor Diljit Dosanjh competed for Best Performance by an Actor.

The film, which revisits the life and legacy of Punjab’s controversial folk music icon Amar Singh Chamkila, had gained strong critical momentum ahead of the awards. But it faced stiff global competition. In the TV Movie/Mini-Series category, the project competed against Germany’s Herrhausen: The Banker and the Bomb, Chile’s Vencer o Morir (Victory or Death), and the UK production Lost Boys and Fairies, which ultimately took the award.

Diljit Dosanjh, widely praised for his immersive portrayal of Chamkila, lost the Best Actor trophy to Spanish actor Oriol Pla for Yo, adicto (I, Addict). Other nominees included David Mitchell for Ludwig and Diego Vasquez for One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Despite the results, the Indian contingent made a notable appearance on the red carpet. Dosanjh greeted photographers with a “namaste,” while Imtiaz Ali was joined by Netflix India executives, including Monika Shergill, Vice President of Content, and Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director of Original Films. Their presence reflected the platform’s continued push to elevate Indian storytelling on global stages.

Earlier at the International Emmy World Television Festival, Ali discussed the creative vision behind the film, describing it as a “love story between an artist and his art.” He said Chamkila’s work was fuelled not by commercial ambition but by a deep devotion to his audience and crafta theme that shaped the film’s narrative approach.

While the team returns without a win, the dual nominations underscore the growing visibility of Indian long-form content in international award circuits.
