‘Border 2’ Overtakes ‘Dhurandhar’ at Box Office, Clocks ₹129.89 Crore in Opening Weekend

The war drama Border 2 has emerged as the strongest performer of the year so far, surpassing Dhurandhar in its opening weekend box office collection. The film earned ₹129.89 crore in its first three days, according to industry estimates, establishing itself as a major commercial success and reaffirming Sunny Deol’s enduring box office appeal.

Starring Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty, Border 2 is the sequel to the 1997 blockbuster Border. Directed by Anurag Singh, the film is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta and Nidhi Dutta. With its opening weekend numbers, the film has overtaken Dhurandhar, which collected around ₹103 crore in its first three days.

Released nationwide on January 23, Border 2 recorded a strong performance across multiplexes and single-screen theatres, particularly in North India and major urban centres.

The film opened to ₹32.10 crore on Friday, followed by a sharp rise to ₹40.59 crore on Saturday. Sunday witnessed the biggest jump, with collections touching ₹57.20 crore, driven by positive word-of-mouth and packed weekend shows. Trade analysts attribute the steady upward trend to the film’s patriotic theme, mass appeal and strong holiday weekend turnout.

Industry observers say nostalgia played a key role in drawing audiences, with Border 2 tapping into the legacy of the original film while presenting a contemporary narrative. Sunny Deol’s screen presence, coupled with a multi-star cast, helped attract both older viewers and younger audiences. The film’s music and large-scale action sequences have also contributed to repeat footfalls.

Adding to the film’s buzz, Sunny Deol and Ahan Shetty made an unannounced appearance at Mumbai’s Gaiety Galaxy Theatre on Sunday during a screening of the film. Their arrival sparked excitement among moviegoers, with videos showing packed halls, loud whistles and applause, particularly during Deol’s entry scenes. Outside the theatre, the actors greeted fans and thanked them for their support, further amplifying the film’s positive momentum on social media.

With a strong opening weekend behind it, Border 2 is expected to maintain its box office run in the coming days, barring major new releases. Trade experts believe the film is well positioned to cross further milestones if weekday collections remain stable.
