‘Dhurandhar’ OTT Debut Sparks Backlash Over Censored Netflix Version

Blockbuster action drama Dhurandhar, which crossed the ₹1,000 crore mark at the global box office, has made its long-awaited streaming debut on Netflix, but the release has triggered sharp criticism from viewers over extensive edits in the digital version. Fans have alleged that the OTT cut includes nearly 10 minutes of removed footage and several muted dialogues, changes they say dilute the film’s narrative impact.

The controversy surfaced within hours of the film’s release on the platform, with audiences taking to social media to question why an adult-certified film was altered so heavily for streaming. Viewers pointed out that other A-rated titles, including Animal and Kabir Singh, were made available on OTT platforms without comparable cuts, intensifying scrutiny of the decision surrounding Dhurandhar.

According to fan reactions, key confrontational scenes and sharp dialogues—central to the film’s tone—appear either trimmed or silenced. Many argued that such modifications defeat the purpose of releasing an adult-rated film on a subscription-based platform, where viewers expect access to the original theatrical version. Several users have urged the filmmakers and Netflix to clarify whether an uncut edition will be released.

Neither Netflix nor the film’s producers have issued an official statement addressing the edits as of now. Industry observers note that while OTT platforms sometimes make region-specific or compliance-driven changes, significant alterations to a commercially and critically successful film can risk alienating its core audience.

The backlash comes amid Dhurandhar’s continued commercial momentum. The film earned ₹668.80 crore in India alone and closed its 21-day theatrical run with a worldwide collection of approximately ₹1,006.7 crore. Notably, trade estimates indicated that its 21st day registered higher footfalls than its opening day, with earnings of around ₹26 crore, close to its initial ₹28 crore debut—an uncommon trajectory for a mainstream release.

Adding to the film’s visibility is the confirmed announcement of Dhurandhar 2, slated for release in March 2026. The sequel is expected to launch in five languages, reflecting the original film’s strong performance across regions, particularly in South India, where it found a substantial audience base.

For now, however, attention remains fixed on the streaming version. Analysts suggest that the response to Dhurandhar’s OTT cut could influence how studios and platforms handle adult-certified content in the future, especially when theatrical success sets high expectations for digital releases.

Whether the makers will respond with an uncut version or further clarification remains to be seen, but the episode has reopened debate over creative integrity and censorship standards in India’s rapidly expanding OTT ecosystem.1000cr
