Bollywood’s legendary romance Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and the milestone was marked with a special tribute in London. Stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol unveiled a bronze statue of themselves in Leicester Square, replicating their iconic pose as Raj and Simran from the film.
The statue, part of the UK’s Scenes in the Square trail, makes DDLJ the first Indian film to be honored in this global series. Shah Rukh Khan, dressed in a black suit, described the moment as “incredible” and reflected on the UK’s significance for Indian cinema. “The UK was the first country to give recognition to Indian films. DDLJ gave Indian cinema a new identity abroad. To have our film become part of the culture here is a proud moment,” he said.
Kajol, wearing a blue saree, shared fond memories from the shoot, including the challenging bus scene filmed in cold, rainy conditions. She remarked, “Simran is a character that never ends. She represents millions of girls who respect their parents but also chase their dreams. A little bit of DDLJ lives in every romantic film made after it.”
Directed by Aditya Chopra, DDLJ was released on 20 October 1995 and remains India’s longest-running film, still screening at Maratha Mandir in Mumbai. The film’s story, memorable characters, and music continue to resonate with audiences globally. Shah Rukh reflected, “We shot this film like a vacation. No one knew it would become such a big hit. Today, it belongs not just to us, but to every viewer who has cherished it in their memories.”
Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, called the statue “a moment of pride,” highlighting its placement among global icons like Harry Potter and Batman. Mark Williams, Deputy Chief Executive of Heart of London Business Alliance, added, “This film defines an entire generation of India and has now become a global cultural icon.”
The 3D eye of the statue, designed by Sally Regis, ensures the sculpture captures the essence of the film and its characters, commemorating three decades of DDLJ’s enduring legacy.
