"‘He betrayed me...’, the actress broke down in tears while testifying in the sexual harassment case."
In the ongoing sexual assault trial against former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, a victim gave an emotional testimony in court. On Friday (May 2), 48-year-old Miriam “Mimi” Haley tearfully testified, saying, “He assaulted me, not the other way around.” Her eyes welled up as she recalled the traumatic incident. The case dates back nearly two decades, with Haley accusing Weinstein of forcibly sexually assaulting her.
A retrial is currently underway in a New York court, and Haley is the first victim to take the stand. She testified on the fourth day of the proceedings. During cross-examination, Weinstein’s attorney Jennifer Bonjean asked her tough questions, causing Haley to become visibly emotional. When Bonjean questioned whether the encounter was consensual, Haley responded through tears and anger: “This is not for the jury to decide. This is my experience. He did this to me.”
Following Haley’s emotional response, Judge Curtis Farber paused the hearing and excused the jury for a break. During the testimony, Haley’s eyes were red and filled with tears. She left the witness stand without looking in Weinstein’s direction. After the break, the hearing resumed, though Haley's voice at times reflected frustration and sorrow.
During the hearing, a heated exchange took place between the lawyer and Haley. The judge grew visibly upset over unnecessary remarks made by both sides. At one point, Judge Farber slammed his fist on the bench, and later struck his gavel, warning both parties to maintain proper courtroom conduct. He later remarked that in his 13 years on the bench, this was the first time he had felt the need to use the gavel.
