Actor Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri’s upcoming film O Romeo is set to release on the eve of Valentine’s Day, positioning itself as a layered romantic drama rather than a conventional love story. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film brings Kapoor back in collaboration with the filmmaker after nearly eight years and marks another performance-driven project for Dimri.
Speaking during an exclusive interaction, the actors said O Romeo explores love through emotional depth and complex character arcs. Kapoor described the film as a story that balances artistic sensitivity with wider audience appeal, while Dimri highlighted the emotional intensity of her role.
Kapoor said he approaches every script with a neutral mindset, regardless of past associations. “For me, the story and the character have to connect honestly,” he said, adding that Bhardwaj’s narration convinced him the film had the emotional layers he looks for as an actor. He noted that the director has crafted the narrative keeping both mass and class audiences in mind.
Dimri said she was immediately drawn to the project when Bhardwaj first narrated the script. Calling the experience creatively fulfilling, she said some films leave a lasting impact on an actor, and O Romeo was one such journey. Her character, Afsha, she explained, is deeply internal, carrying pain, anger and sadness that are not overtly expressed on screen. Portraying that restraint, she said, was the biggest challenge of the role.
The actors also spoke about their working dynamic. Dimri credited Kapoor’s discipline and perfectionism for pushing her performance further, saying his approach creates a secure space for co-actors. Kapoor, in turn, said Dimri’s commitment was evident from the first day of readings, which set the tone for their collaboration.
With the film releasing around Valentine’s Day, Kapoor shared his views on romance, calling it “one of the most beautiful things in life.” While he avoided labeling himself, he acknowledged that love and romance remain central human emotions. Dimri described herself as both romantic and realistic, stressing the importance of balance.
Kapoor also addressed ongoing fan discussions about the possibility of his character Kabir Singh appearing in Animal Park. He confirmed that filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga had once considered the idea, but scheduling and other constraints prevented it. “That world belongs to the director,” Kapoor said, adding that audience attachment to characters is always encouraging.
O Romeo is expected to hit theatres nationwide on February 13.
