Akshay Kumar hugs 88-year-old martial artist in Surat: Shanta Ba’s sword and stick act amazes crowd at 17th International Kudo Tournament

The 17th Akshay Kumar International Kudo Tournament 2025–26 concluded in Surat with high energy and excitement, drawing participation from over 2,000 Kudo athletes representing 32 Indian states.

Star-studded closing ceremony

The grand finale on October 30 turned into a glamorous event as Akshay Kumar, Jackie Shroff, and Twinkle Khanna attended to motivate budding martial artists and celebrate the spirit of Kudo.

88-year-old Shanta Ba steals the spotlight

The evening’s showstopper was 88-year-old Shanta Pawar, lovingly known as Shanta Ba, who travelled from Pune with her granddaughters. Her breathtaking stick and sword demonstration left the audience in awe, proving that age is no obstacle to strength, discipline, or passion.

Trained in martial arts since the age of nine by her parents, Shanta Ba has dedicated her life to preserving this traditional art. Even today, she performs in cities across India, earning her living through street performances to help support orphaned children.

A life connected to Bollywood

Beyond her martial arts journey, Shanta Ba has also worked in Hindi cinema as a body double for leading actresses. She performed stunts in films like Seeta Aur Geeta (with Hema Malini) and Sherni (with Sridevi), carving a niche for herself in an industry dominated by men.

Akshay Kumar’s emotional moment

Her 15-minute performance drew thunderous applause from thousands in the audience. Deeply moved by her determination and grace, Akshay Kumar — a martial arts champion himself — rushed off the stage and hugged Shanta Ba, earning a standing ovation for the heartwarming gesture.

Jackie Shroff’s Gujarati flair wins hearts

Adding to the evening’s warmth, Jackie Shroff entertained the crowd in his signature style, greeting them in Gujarati:
“Jai Maai Ki! Why worry... say Jai Mataji. There should be a young person in every home!”
He ended playfully, saying, “See you sometime — I’ll come to eat dhokla comfortably.” The audience responded with cheers and laughter.

Honouring the police

The event also recognized Surat Police personnel for their outstanding service. Blending sportsmanship, inspiration, and respect, the tournament finale celebrated courage, discipline, and the vibrant spirit of Gujarat.
