Alia Bhatt Set to Star in and Co-Produce ‘Housewife’; Rajkummar Rao in Talks for Lead Role

Actor Alia Bhatt is set to expand her slate as both performer and producer with Housewife, a relationship-driven drama backed by filmmaker Abhishek Pathak. According to industry reports, Bhatt will headline the film while also co-producing it under her banner, Eternal Sunshine Productions, in collaboration with Pathak’s Panorama Studios.
Sources indicate that Rajkummar Rao is in advanced discussions to play the male lead opposite Bhatt, though an official announcement from the makers is awaited. If finalised, the project would bring together two of Hindi cinema’s most acclaimed contemporary actors in a character-centric narrative.
Housewife is being positioned as an intimate drama that explores personal relationships and domestic spaces, marking a tonal shift from Bhatt’s recent large-scale projects. Pathak, who previously directed Drishyam 2, is expected to begin work on the film after completing Drishyam 3. Production is tentatively scheduled to start between August and September this year, subject to final casting and schedules.
For Bhatt, the project underscores a continued focus on content-driven cinema alongside commercial ventures. Through Eternal Sunshine Productions, she has signalled interest in developing stories led by strong characters and contemporary themes. Industry observers note that Housewife fits that trajectory, offering scope for a nuanced performance rather than spectacle.
The film adds to Bhatt’s busy pipeline. She is currently drawing attention for Alpha, a high-octane action thriller directed by Shiv Rawail and set within the YRF Spy Universe. In the film, Bhatt plays a commanding officer leading an elite all-women combat unit, with Sharvari Wagh co-starring and Bobby Deol in a key role. The release date has not yet been announced.
Bhatt is also slated to appear in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal, a project that has generated significant anticipation due to its cast and director. Her most recent on-screen appearance was in Jigra, directed by Vasan Bala, where she starred opposite Vedang Raina.
Rajkummar Rao, meanwhile, continues to be in demand for roles anchored in realism and strong writing, making his potential involvement in Housewife a natural fit for the film’s reported tone.
With casting discussions ongoing and production timelines taking shape, Housewife is emerging as one of the more closely watched mid-budget dramas on the upcoming Hindi film slate.
