Anushka Sharma Set for Acting Comeback After Seven Years; ‘Chakda Xpress’ Makers Push for OTT Release

Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma is preparing to make her acting comeback after a seven-year hiatus with Chakda Xpress, the long-delayed biopic on Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami. The film, completed several years ago, has remained unreleased due to disputes between Netflix and the production house Clean Slate Filmz, co-founded by Anushka and her brother Karnesh Sharma.

According to a Mid-Day report, the project may finally see light after renewed discussions between the producers and Netflix India. Following the Indian women’s cricket team’s recent ODI World Cup victory, the filmmakers have written to the streaming platform’s top executives urging them to release the film.

“We have personally written to the top officials of Netflix India to release the film, rising above this controversy. A biopic made on a legend like Jhulan Di must reach the audience,” a source close to the project said.

The film reportedly faced delays as Netflix was dissatisfied with the final cut and production quality, while the producers ran out of budget to make further revisions. Despite these issues, insiders insist that Chakda Xpress remains a powerful sports drama highlighting Goswami’s inspiring journey from a small-town girl in Bengal to the captain of India’s women’s cricket team.

If released soon, the project will mark Anushka Sharma’s first lead role since the 2018 Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Zero. Since then, she has focused on production, backing acclaimed projects such as Bulbbul (2020) and Qala (2022), in which she made a brief cameo.

Discussions regarding Chakda Xpress are reportedly at an advanced stage, and an announcement about its OTT release could be made later this month.
