AR Rahman Gets HC Relief as Copyright Case Dismissed

The Delhi High Court recently ruled in favor of musician AR Rahman and dismissed a lawsuit filed against him for copyright infringement of the song "Veera Raja Veera" from the Tamil film "Ponniyin Selvan: II."

A division bench of Justices C. Hari Shankar and Om Prakash Shukla passed the order on AR Rahman's appeal. The High Court stated that the appeal is allowed and the single judge's order is set aside in principle. The High Court clarified that it did not express any opinion on the copyright infringement issue. The court said, "We have allowed the appeal. We have prepared a concurrent opinion. We have set aside the single judge's order in principle."

What is the matter?

Singer Fayaz Wasifuddin Dagar claimed that the song "Veera Raja Veera" was copied from "Shiva Stuti," a song composed by his father, Nasir Fayazuddin Dagar, and uncle, Zaheeruddin Dagar. He stated that the song's lyrics are different, but the rhythm, tempo, and musical structure are similar to "Shiva Stuti," which the Dagar brothers performed worldwide. It was included in a Pan Records album. This song is not from the film "Ponniyin Selvan: II," which was said to be similar to the Dagar brothers' composition "Shiva Stuti."
