Arun Govil Backs Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Says ‘Ramayana’ Should Not Be Compared with ‘Adipurush’

Arun Govil, the iconic actor who portrayed Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s legendary television series Ramayan, has praised Ranbir Kapoor’s casting in the upcoming film Ramayana and urged audiences not to compare it with the recently released film Adipurush. In an interview with PTI, Govil emphasized that each adaptation of the epic is distinct and should be evaluated on its own merits.

“Every new adaptation is different, so instead of judging it by previous attempts, one should understand its different aspects and should not compare the new Ramayana with Adipurush,” Govil said. He acknowledged that comparisons are inevitable but cautioned against judging a film solely based on another version’s reception.

Govil lauded Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Ram, highlighting both his acting skills and personal character. “Ranbir is not only a good actor, but also a good human being, and these qualities are necessary to portray a divine character convincingly on screen,” Govil remarked. He added, “To play the role of God, your appearance should be such that when people see you, they see God in you and think that God could be like this. This is really important.”

The upcoming film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram. The cast includes Yash as Raavan, Sai Pallavi as Mother Sita, Sunny Deol in the role of Hanuman, and Ravi Dubey portraying Lakshman. Govil appreciated the overall effort and look of the film, noting that the team has put in extensive work to ensure authenticity and visual appeal.

The remarks come amid discussions around Adipurush, which faced criticism and controversy over its creative interpretation of the epic. By differentiating Ramayana from Adipurush, Govil seeks to encourage audiences to approach the film with an open mind and evaluate it independently.

Arun Govil’s endorsement carries weight, given his enduring legacy as one of the most recognized and revered portrayals of Lord Ram in Indian television history. His comments underscore the responsibility and challenge of portraying such a revered figure, emphasizing that both talent and personal integrity are critical in bringing mythological characters to life on screen.

As the anticipation builds for Ramayana, Govil’s remarks reinforce confidence in the project and highlight the importance of respecting each retelling of the timeless epic in its unique cinematic context.
