Assam Musician Samar Hazarika Passes Away at 75

Renowned Assamese musician and singer Samar Hazarika passed away on Tuesday at his home in the Nijarapar area of Guwahati. He was 75 years old and had been battling a prolonged illness. Family members confirmed his death, noting that he is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.

Samar Hazarika was the youngest brother of Bharat Ratna recipient Bhupen Hazarika and the youngest of ten siblings in the celebrated Hazarika family. Known for his melodious voice and contribution to Assamese music, he sang numerous songs and composed for radio, albums, and films, playing a key role in preserving and promoting the family’s rich musical legacy. His work often reflected themes of humanity, brotherhood, and cultural pride.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep sorrow over Hazarika’s passing. Posting on X, Sarma said, “Samar Hazarika’s voice made every occasion special. He carried forward the legacy of Bhupen Hazarika and contributed significantly to Assamese culture, including the centenary celebrations of his brother. Assam has lost another excellent voice. My condolences to the family and loved ones.”

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also mourned the musician’s demise, noting the poignant timing of his passing on Uruka, the eve of Magh Bihu. Sonowal said, “His voice touched hearts across generations. Samar Hazarika’s contribution to Assamese music will always be remembered.”

Born and raised in a family deeply rooted in music, Samar Hazarika dedicated his life to carrying forward the Hazarika legacy while cultivating his own distinct artistic identity. Throughout his career, he maintained a close connection with audiences, performing across Assam and contributing to projects that highlighted the state’s cultural heritage.

His death marks the end of an era for the Assamese music scene, as he was among the last direct bearers of the musical tradition pioneered by his elder brother Bhupen Hazarika. Colleagues, fans, and cultural organizations have expressed their grief and remembered him for his commitment to music, mentorship to young artists, and dedication to promoting Assamese culture nationally and internationally.

Funeral arrangements are expected to take place in Guwahati, with family, friends, and admirers paying their respects in the coming days. Samar Hazarika’s life and music continue to be celebrated as a symbol of Assam’s enduring cultural richness.98
