Bipasha Basu’s real-life brush with the supernatural: From Mukesh Mills to eerie whispers on 'Aatma' set

In the glamorous world of Bollywood, where lights, cameras, and larger-than-life stories rule, Bipasha Basu has carved her place as the undisputed queen of horror. From Raaz and Aatma to Alone, she’s terrified audiences with her spine-chilling performances — but few know that the actress has also faced eerie, unexplained experiences off-screen that could rival any horror script.

Chilling Happenings on the Set of Aatma

During the outdoor shoot of Aatma (2013) in Panchgani, a tranquil hill station, strange and unsettling events began to occur.

  • Lights flickered or went out without any electrical issue.

  • Crew members heard whispers and footsteps when no one was nearby.

  • Some suffered unexplained accidents — one tripped into an unseen pit, another felt “pushed” while walking on set.

Even local helpers warned the team that the bungalow being used for filming had a “dark aura.”

One of the most mysterious incidents happened during the filming of an emotional scene when a faint female voice could be heard humming softly. Everyone on set heard it, but when they played back the recording, the voice was missing. After that, several crew members refused to stay late at night.

Bipasha’s Sudden Eye Allergy

While shooting the same film, Bipasha suddenly developed a severe eye allergy overnight — her eyes turned red, swollen, and painful. Doctors couldn’t determine the cause, forcing a temporary halt in the schedule. The actress later admitted she felt surrounded by “negative energy” on set, describing the discomfort as “unnatural” and beyond ordinary exhaustion from performing intense horror scenes.

Haunted Experience at Mukesh Mills

One of Bipasha’s scariest real-life moments came while shooting Footpath (2003) at Mumbai’s Mukesh Mills, long known as one of Bollywood’s most haunted filming locations.

During a sequence that required her to walk down a deserted corridor, she suddenly felt an invisible force pulling her back, as though something was preventing her from moving forward. The temperature dropped sharply, and the atmosphere grew heavy. Shaken by the experience, the actress stopped shooting, and the crew soon reported flickering lights and strange sounds. The production eventually shifted to another location.

Bipasha later said she truly believed that certain places “hold trapped, dark energies” — a realization that deepened her respect for the supernatural.

Unnerving Incidents During Raaz Shoot

The cast and crew of Raaz also witnessed strange occurrences while filming at Ooty’s Fernhill Hotel, the Pine Forest, and Lawrence School.

One night, choreographer Saroj Khan and her team, who had checked into the hotel late, were kept awake by the sound of heavy furniture being dragged in the room above. When they tried calling the front desk, the phone was dead. Frustrated, some went downstairs to complain — only to be told by the receptionist, visibly frightened, that there was no floor above their room.

In another bizarre moment, a photograph of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, which had slipped during a take, suddenly jumped up and straightened itself on the wall. The movement happened out of frame but was caught on the camera monitor, leaving everyone stunned.

During a separate shoot in a Vashi office, Bipasha recalled hearing a faint female voice singing mid-scene. Only she and an assistant could hear it, yet the recordist never stopped the take — a mystery that remains, as she put it, “a raaz that can’t be explained.”

From haunted mills to eerie whispers and inexplicable forces, Bipasha Basu’s off-screen encounters prove that sometimes, the real horror begins when the director calls “cut.”
