Deepika Padukone Speaks Out on ‘Kalki 2’ and ‘Spirit’ Controversy: “Male Superstars Work 8 Hours, Yet I Was Targeted”

Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has finally addressed the controversy surrounding her exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit and Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2, which reportedly stemmed from her demand for an 8-hour work shift. In a candid interview, she highlighted the double standards in the industry, noting that male superstars have been following similar schedules for years without attracting criticism.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Deepika said, “As a woman, if this is perceived as putting pressure, then so be it. But it’s no secret that many male superstars in the Indian film industry have been working eight-hour shifts for years, and it’s never made headlines.”

She added, “I don’t want to name anyone or make it a big issue, but this is very common. Many male actors work eight hours daily from Monday to Friday and take weekends off. It’s well known, yet it’s rarely highlighted.”

Deepika also emphasized the need for industry reform: “Even though it’s called an industry, we have never functioned like one. The system is disorganized, and now it’s time to bring change to this culture.”

The actress had reportedly exited Spirit and Kalki 2 due to her work-hour demands and fees, which some labeled as unprofessional.

On the work front, Deepika will next star alongside Allu Arjun in a film directed by Atlee, and she will also appear with Shah Rukh Khan in King.
