Delhi High Court clears release of ‘2020 Delhi’, India’s First One-Shot Feature Film

The Delhi High Court has dismissed all petitions seeking a ban on the Indore-made film ‘2020 Delhi’, paving the way for the release of India’s first one-shot Hindi feature film on November 14, 2025. The film, which depicts events surrounding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests and the Delhi riots, had faced significant legal and political challenges.

Petitions against the film were filed by seven individuals accused in the 2020 Delhi riots, including Sharjeel Imam, who argued that the movie could prejudice public opinion against them. The court, however, upheld the filmmakers' right to creative expression. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has already granted the film a UA certificate.

The project also drew political fire. Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi previously labeled the film "BJP propaganda" and called for the Election Commission to intervene. In contrast, BJP leader and Union Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has endorsed the film, praising its creators and confirming that the Madhya Pradesh government provided production subsidies. He also stated efforts would be made to make the film tax-free in the state.

Director Devendra Malviya, who also wrote and produced the film, expressed relief at overcoming the eight-month delay caused by the controversies. He stated the opposition was disheartening but affirmed his commitment to the project's creative vision. The film's title track, 'Yuddh Kar', was recently launched with support from Vijayvargiya.

With all legal hurdles cleared, ‘2020 Delhi’ is set for a nationwide release, marking a significant milestone in Indian cinema as a one-shot film tackling a sensitive contemporary subject.
