Delhi High Court Declines Stay on Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar, Directs CBFC to Review Family’s Objections

The Delhi High Court on Monday refused to halt the release of Dhurandhar, the upcoming Ranveer Singh starrer scheduled to hit theatres on December 5. The ruling came amid a petition filed by the family of Major Mohit Sharma, who alleged that the film draws directly from the officer’s life without permission from either the family or the Indian Army.
Justice Sachin Datta, hearing the case, directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to examine the family’s objections before issuing a final certification. The court, however, made it clear that it would not intervene at this stage, noting that the statutory responsibility of film certification lies solely with the CBFC.
During the arguments, counsel representing Major Sharma’s family said the film’s portrayal is not a “general resemblance” but a depiction drawn from the officer’s legacy. They claimed that despite the producers labeling Dhurandhar as fictional, public perception and media narratives are aligning Ranveer Singh’s role with the decorated Army officer.
Senior advocate Saurabh Kirpal, appearing for the film’s producers, denied any connection between the film and Major Sharma. He asserted that while Sharma was killed in Jammu, the film follows the story of a Special Forces officer linked to operations in Pakistan, with different locations, circumstances and narrative arcs.
CBFC’s counsel informed the court that the certification process is already underway. Major Sharma’s family requested a private screening to verify the makers’ claim that the film is fictional, but the court declined, reiterating that such decisions fall under the Board’s jurisdiction.
Justice Datta instructed the CBFC to expedite its review and consider whether the matter requires consultation with an expert committee of the Indian Army. The court dismissed the petition, paving the way for the film to proceed toward release pending certification.
Dhurandhar is set to release nationwide on December 5.
