Diddy Combs sentenced to over 4 years in prison: Music mogul breaks down in court for mercy

Sean "Diddy" Combs, the 55-year-old music and business mogul, has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison. A Brooklyn court handed down the sentence after he was found guilty of arranging drug-fueled sexual encounters across state lines.

While Combs is accused of racketeering and sex trafficking. However, he was convicted on two counts related to arranging for paid male escorts to travel across state lines. These escorts participated in drug-fueled sexual activities, sometimes called "Freak Offs," with Combs' girlfriends, while he filmed the encounters and masturbated.

Combs has been in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since his arrest in September 2024. He appeared in court on Friday, looking noticeably thinner, and apologised for his past behaviour, describing it as "disgusting, shameful, sick."

The court had rejected his bail petition in 2017. However, he had been acquitted of the most serious charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. According to the BBC report, Judge Arun Subramanian said that Diddy had previous cases of violence registered against him. Therefore, he will have to remain in jail until sentencing.

The trial had run for about two months in a New York City federal court. Prosecutors had said Diddy used his identity and business to run a criminal gang that trafficked women for sex.

The 12 jury members deliberated for 13 hours. After this, they had found him not guilty in three out of five serious charges.

According to BBC, Sean "Diddy" Combs received a sentence of just over four years in prison on Friday, following his conviction on prostitution-related charges involving his two former girlfriends. While Combs' legal team argued for a reduced sentence of 14 months, citing his claimed reformation after 13 months in a New York jail, prosecutors sought a harsher 11-year term, pointing to his history of domestic violence.

While Combs faced the possibility of a life sentence, jury acquitted him of racketeering and sex trafficking charges in July. Judge Arun Subramanian, an Indian-American, presided over the case. He stated that the sentence was necessary to reflect the seriousness of Combs' actions and to deter similar behaviour in the future. The judge emphasised the importance of sending a clear message that abuse against women will be met with accountability.

‘’I don't have nobody to blame but myself," Combs told the judge. He vowed to never harm another person again and acknowledged that his past acts of domestic violence would be a burden he would carry for the rest of his life.

Addressing Combs directly, the judge stated that he could not simply wash his crimes, and that his past actions would forever define him. However, the judge also offered a glimmer of hope, quoting words of encouragement from his own family- children, sister, and mother, who had written letters to the court, saying, "You are going to get through this. There is a light at the end of the tunnel." Judge Subramanian acknowledged the hardship that prison time would inflict on Combs' family. However, he also noted that Combs would have the opportunity to rebuild his life after serving his sentence.
