Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy, has died at the age of 53 following complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his family confirmed Thursday. He passed away surrounded by relatives and close friends after what they described as a determined and courageous fight against the progressive neurological disease.
In a statement, his family said Dane spent his final days with his wife and daughters, calling them “the center of his world,” and asked for privacy while they grieve. The actor publicly revealed his diagnosis in 2025 and subsequently used his platform to promote awareness and research efforts related to the illness.
Dane built a television and film career spanning more than three decades. After early appearances in series such as The Wonder Years and Roseanne, he gained industry attention through recurring roles, including on Gideon's Crossing. His profile rose further when he appeared in Charmed, before achieving mainstream fame in 2006 with his debut as the charismatic plastic surgeon nicknamed “McSteamy” on Grey’s Anatomy. He remained a fan favourite through multiple seasons and later returned for a guest appearance in 2021.
Beyond television, Dane also featured in major films including X‑Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, and Valentine's Day, demonstrating range across genres from action to romantic drama. In recent years, he appeared in the HBO series Euphoria, introducing him to a new generation of viewers.
Tributes from colleagues quickly followed news of his death. Actress Alyssa Milano, who worked with him on Charmed, praised his wit and presence, recalling his sharp humor and ability to surprise people. Actor Nina Dobrev, his co-star in Redeeming Love, described him as warm, generous, and deeply passionate about his craft, adding that his memory should inspire further research into ALS.
Industry analysts note that Dane’s portrayal of Mark Sloan helped define one of television’s most successful medical dramas during its peak ratings era. His performance combined charm, vulnerability, and comedic timing, elements that critics say contributed significantly to the show’s enduring popularity.
Dane is survived by his wife and two daughters. His death marks the loss of a performer whose work resonated across television and film, and whose advocacy during illness drew admiration from fans and colleagues alike.
