Hema Malini Breaks Silence After Dharmendra’s Death, Calls Final Days ‘Impossible to Cope With’

Veteran actor and parliamentarian Hema Malini has spoken publicly for the first time since the death of cinema icon Dharmendra, describing his final days as emotionally overwhelming and deeply painful. Dharmendra passed away on November 24 after a prolonged period of illness, leaving the film industry and his family in mourning.

Hema Malini said the loss was a shock she found “impossible to cope with,” particularly because the family had hoped for his recovery until the very end. She recalled that during the month-long hospitalisation, the entire family stood together, believing he would return home as he had after previous health setbacks.

“We were all there—Esha, Ahana, Sunny, and Bobby—together in the hospital. Many times before, he had gone to the hospital and come back after recovering. We thought this time too he would return,” she said.

Hema Malini described Dharmendra as affectionate and emotionally present even during his illness. She noted that he had wished her on her birthday in October and that the family was preparing to celebrate his 90th birthday on December 8. “Everything was being planned, and suddenly he was no longer with us. It was very difficult to see his health deteriorate in front of my eyes,” she said.

Addressing rumours and viral videos circulating online, Hema Malini urged people not to be misled by manipulated content. She said while she appreciated the concern of fans and friends, she preferred to grieve privately. “I am a strong person. I keep my emotions to myself,” she said.

Reflecting on coping with loss, the actress drew parallels with her mother’s death two decades ago, saying life teaches resilience. She shared intimate memories, including Dharmendra’s fondness for home-cooked food. “Whenever we make thepla, idli-sambar, or coffee, we miss him. Keeping him alive in our memories is important,” she said.

Hema Malini also commented on Sunny Deol’s visible anger toward the media during the funeral, saying the family was emotionally vulnerable and distressed by relentless media attention.

Recalling happier times, she spoke of Dharmendra’s farmhouse in Lonavala, where he enjoyed a quieter life surrounded by nature. She said he often brought homemade ghee for the family and adjusted his schedule to spend time with her whenever possible.

Looking ahead, Hema Malini said she plans to return to work soon, believing it is what Dharmendra would have wanted. “Resuming my performances and responsibilities would make him happy,” she said.
