Veteran actress Hema Malini, widow of Bollywood icon Dharmendra, has spoken about the actor’s final days, describing them as “extremely painful,” and expressed regret over the hurried conduct of his funeral. Dharmendra passed away on November 24 due to age-related illnesses, leaving fans and the film fraternity in mourning.
Hema shared her reflections with UAE filmmaker Hamad Al Riyami, who met her three days after Dharmendra’s demise at her residence. “I wish I was with him at the farmhouse, where I met him two months ago. I wish I could see him there,” she reportedly told Hamad, recalling the actor’s struggle in his last days.
She also highlighted Dharmendra’s literary side, revealing that he wrote beautiful poems which he never published. “I always used to tell him, why don’t you publish your beautiful poems and compositions? But time didn’t give him a chance,” Malini said. She expressed concern that strangers may write about him while his personal words remain unreleased.
Regarding the funeral, Hema explained that Dharmendra had always preferred to keep his illness private, even from close family. “Dharmendra never wanted anyone to see him in a weak or sick condition. After a person passes away, the decision rests with the family,” she said, noting that the quick conduct of the funeral was in line with his wishes.
Hamad described the encounter as emotionally intense, recalling how he comforted Malini during their conversation. “But what happened was for the best because you couldn’t have seen him in that condition. His last days were very cruel and painful. We ourselves could barely bear to see him in that state,” she told him.
Dharmendra, one of Indian cinema’s most beloved actors, leaves behind a legacy spanning decades, with Hema Malini continuing to honor his memory while processing the profound loss of her partner.
