Madras High Court Clears Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ for Release, Directs CBFC to Grant U/A Certificate

The Madras High Court on Friday cleared the release of actor Vijay’s much-anticipated film Jana Nayagan, directing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a U/A certificate. The court’s intervention ends days of uncertainty surrounding the film’s release after certification delays triggered legal action by the filmmakers.

Justice P.T. Asha, who heard the matter, ruled that the CBFC’s delay in granting certification was unjustified, particularly as the objections were raised at an advanced stage of the certification process. The court observed that regulatory authorities must act consistently and responsibly, warning that entertaining last-minute complaints without due scrutiny could set an unhealthy precedent for the film industry.

The dispute arose when a CBFC panel member flagged concerns that certain portions of the film could hurt religious sentiments. As a result, the certification was withheld, delaying the planned theatrical release scheduled for January 9. The filmmakers approached the High Court after repeated submissions failed to yield a decision from the certification body.

During the hearing, the court noted that the producers had already complied with the CBFC’s earlier suggestions, including muting certain dialogues and removing specific visuals. Despite these changes, the certificate was not issued in time, leading to widespread disruption in domestic and overseas screenings.

The delay reportedly caused significant financial losses. Advance bookings had already opened across India and international markets, forcing theatres to cancel shows and process refunds. Distributors and exhibitors informed the court that the postponement had resulted in logistical complications and revenue setbacks.

With the court order now in place, Jana Nayagan has been cleared for release, although the makers are yet to officially announce a revised release date. Industry sources suggest the film could hit theatres shortly, possibly aligning with the Pongal festival window around January 14.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay in the lead role alongside Prakash Raj, Pooja Hegde, and Mamitha Baiju. The film was submitted to the CBFC for certification on December 18 after completion of post-production.

The release carries added significance as Jana Nayagan is widely expected to be Vijay’s final film before his full-time entry into politics. The actor has publicly stated his intention to step away from cinema to focus on public service, making the film a landmark moment in his career.

The court’s ruling is being viewed as a reaffirmation of procedural accountability in film certification, balancing creative freedom with regulatory oversight.
