Lyricist and writer Manoj Muntashir has publicly disagreed with Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman’s recent remarks suggesting the presence of religious or caste-based discrimination in the Hindi film industry. Muntashir said his own experience over the past decade does not align with Rahman’s observations and pointed to major commercial successes as evidence of an inclusive creative space.
Muntashir said the country holds immense respect for Rahman and acknowledged his global stature and contribution to Indian music. However, he clarified that he does not share Rahman’s assessment of the industry. “In my last 10 to 12 years of work, I have never felt discrimination based on religion or caste,” he said. Referring to the last eight years mentioned by Rahman, Muntashir noted that films such as Pathaan and Jawan crossed the ₹500 crore mark, bringing international recognition to Indian cinema.
Muntashir argued that claims of systemic bias are difficult to reconcile with the industry’s history and present reality. He cited legendary artists such as Javed Akhtar, Sahir Ludhianvi, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Naushad, saying that their legacy reflects a creative ecosystem driven by talent rather than identity. He also questioned how discrimination could be alleged when Rahman continues to score music for major projects, including Chhaava, based on the life of Veer Sambhaji Maharaj, and the upcoming Ramayana.
Composer Mithoon also weighed in, expressing admiration for Rahman while rejecting the notion that the composer faces prejudice within the industry. Mithoon said Rahman commands respect across communities and that his performances, often marked by his faith and identity, are embraced by audiences of all backgrounds. “I have never seen anyone question or diminish Rahman sir because of who he is,” he said.
Rahman’s original remarks were made during an interview with the BBC, where he spoke about a perceived shift in power dynamics over the past eight years and hinted at “whispers” of communal bias affecting creative decisions. The comments triggered sharp reactions across the film fraternity. Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar dismissed the claim, attributing any reduction in work opportunities to Rahman’s international commitments rather than discrimination. Singer Shaan echoed similar views, stating that fluctuations in work are a shared industry reality with no communal angle.
The controversy also drew a strong response from actor Kangana Ranaut, who accused Rahman of personal bias in a social media post. As the debate intensified, Rahman released a clarification video, saying his remarks were misunderstood and reaffirming that India remains his inspiration, home and creative foundation. Actor Paresh Rawal subsequently voiced support for Rahman, sharing the video and expressing pride in the composer.
