Musical tribute honours Sunil and Nargis Dutt as Priya Dutt underscores legacy of service

A musical evening celebrating the legacy of Bollywood icons Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt brought together film personalities, music lovers and philanthropists at Nehru Auditorium in Worli on Friday. Titled Yaadon Ki Geetmala – Deepak Kapadia Presents Down Memory Lane, the concert paid tribute to the legendary couple through their timeless songs, with proceeds earmarked for the Nargis Dutt Foundation.

Six noted singers Anil Bajpai, Gul Saxena, Mukhtar Shah, Kavita Murti, Alok Katare and Shailaja Subramaniam performed classics from the era of Sunil and Nargis Dutt, accompanied by Ajay Madan’s music direction. Commentary by Prashant Rao and a curated display of rare photographs and video snippets added context to the musical journey, drawing repeated applause from a packed auditorium.

Addressing the gathering, daughter Priya Dutt described the evening as deeply personal and emotional. “Good work is the true tribute,” she said, adding that continuing her parents’ commitment to public service mattered more than ceremonial remembrance. She recalled childhood memories and spoke of how songs such as Mera Saaya became especially meaningful to the family after Nargis Dutt’s death. Priya Dutt also highlighted the foundation’s work since 1981 in supporting underprivileged cancer patients, children’s education and allied causes.

Veteran actor Waheeda Rehman, a close friend of the Dutt family, shared memories of working with Sunil Dutt and her long association with Nargis. “Being here brings back many moments from another time,” she said. Cancer survivor and actor Manisha Koirala, who portrayed Nargis Dutt in Sanju, praised the foundation’s sustained efforts, calling its support for patients “invaluable.”

Organisers said the strong turnout reflected the enduring appeal of the couple’s films and music across generations. Beyond nostalgia, the evening reinforced the continuing relevance of the values Sunil and Nargis Dutt stood for service, compassion and social responsibility carried forward through the work of the foundation that bears her name.
