Property Dispute Erupts in Sunjay Kapur Estate; Priya Kapoor Alleges Perjury by Mother-in-Law

A legal battle over the estate of late businessman Sunjay Kapur has intensified, with his third wife, Priya Kapoor, accusing her mother-in-law Rani Kapoor of making false statements before the court in a dispute involving the RK Family Trust.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice to Rani Kapoor after Priya Kapoor filed a petition seeking dismissal of a civil suit initiated by the 80-year-old matriarch. Justice Mini Pushkarna directed Rani Kapoor to respond to allegations that her lawsuit against the family trust is based on misrepresentation and concealment of material facts.
Priya Kapoor has alleged that her mother-in-law committed perjury under provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita by claiming she neither signed nor read the RK Family Trust Deed. The petition states that affidavits and photographic evidence contradict that claim and indicate deliberate falsehood in court filings. Priya has sought action against Rani Kapoor and the outright rejection of the civil suit, calling it a “gross abuse of the legal process.”
The dispute centres on the RK Family Trust, reportedly created in October 2017 in Rani Kapoor’s name. In her suit, Rani Kapoor contends that forged and fraudulent documents were used to establish the trust and that she was unaware of the transfer of assets into it. She has asked the court to permanently restrain Priya Kapoor, her grandchildren and other respondents from operating or benefiting from the trust.
Rani Kapoor maintains that she was the sole beneficiary of her late husband Surinder Kapur’s estate. Surinder Kapur, founder of the Sona Group of Companies and other ventures, accumulated significant business interests over decades. According to her petition, she was systematically deprived of her inheritance and was never informed about the creation of the trust until after Sunjay Kapur’s death.
Sunjay Kapur, a prominent industrialist and former husband of actor Karisma Kapoor, passed away earlier this year, triggering scrutiny of the estate structure and succession arrangements.
Legal experts say the High Court’s decision on the perjury allegations could significantly influence the direction of the case. If the court finds merit in Priya Kapoor’s claims, it may impact the credibility of the original civil suit challenging the trust’s validity.
The matter is scheduled for further hearing after Rani Kapoor files her reply. The outcome is likely to determine control over substantial family assets and shape the next phase of the prolonged inheritance dispute.
