29-year-old singer allegedly abducted at gunpoint over forced marriage pressure; accused reportedly fled to Canada via Nepal after killing, police probe underway
A shocking case of abduction and murder has emerged from Ludhiana, where Punjabi singer Inder Kaur alias Yashinder Kaur (29) was allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint and later found dead in a canal. Her body was recovered from the Neelo canal on Monday morning, six days after she was reported missing, triggering outrage and grief among her family and local community.
According to the family, Inder Kaur was forcibly abducted on the evening of May 13 while she had gone out in her white Ford Figo car to buy groceries. She never returned home. Her disappearance immediately raised alarm, and her family began searching for her on their own before approaching the police.
As per the complaint filed by her brother, Jotinder Singh, the family later discovered that Inder had been in contact with a man named Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukha, originally from Moga district. The accused is currently based in Canada, where he reportedly works in the construction sector and holds permanent residency.
The family alleges that Sukhwinder Singh, along with his father Pritam Singh, a friend Karamjit Singh, and several unidentified associates, kidnapped Inder Kaur at gunpoint with the intention of forcing her into marriage. They further claim that she was taken away in a planned manner and later murdered near the canal.
Police officials confirmed that Inder’s car was recovered a day before her body was found. The recovery of the vehicle intensified the search operation, eventually leading to the discovery of her body in the canal. Authorities have sent the body for post-mortem at a civil hospital in Samrala, while further investigation is underway.
Family members allege that the accused had been pressuring Inder Kaur for marriage for several years. The two had reportedly met through Instagram around five years ago. Their online friendship gradually turned into regular communication, and Sukhwinder allegedly began visiting her home on multiple occasions. However, tensions reportedly escalated after Inder Kaur learned that Sukhwinder was already married and had children. Following this revelation, she refused to marry him, which, according to the family, led to ongoing harassment and threats.
Her brother stated that Inder Kaur had spoken to Sukhwinder on the night of May 13 around 10 PM, telling him she was returning home. Shortly after that, her phone was switched off, and she could no longer be contacted. Investigators are also looking into the accused’s movements, with allegations that he travelled from Canada to India via Nepal specifically to carry out the crime and later escaped using the same route. The family claims he fled back to Canada after committing the murder.
A relative and former municipal councillor, Jaspal Singh Giaspura, said that Sukhwinder had maintained a relationship with Inder Kaur for nearly five to six years and had even visited her during her birthday celebrations earlier this year. He added that Sukhwinder had promised marriage in March but continued delaying it.
Police have registered a case based on the complaint and are investigating multiple angles, including kidnapping, forced marriage pressure, and murder. Officials stated that while allegations of abduction at gunpoint have been made, the exact sequence of events is still being verified. Authorities also confirmed that the accused has not yet been arrested.
The case has taken a further turn as conflicting versions have emerged. While the family insists that Inder Kaur was kidnapped and killed, some statements suggest she may have been travelling with the accused in her car when the incident occurred, and that an argument may have escalated into violence. Police are examining CCTV footage, mobile records, and forensic evidence to establish the truth.
Inder Kaur’s background adds further depth to the tragedy. Originally from Ludhiana, she had earlier worked as a singer and model and even participated in beauty pageants, including winning the title of Miss Pune. She had acted in a few regional films but later shifted to working as a makeup artist after struggling to find stability in the entertainment industry. She had also worked in a corporate job in Delhi before returning to Ludhiana. According to her family, she was trying to rebuild her life and focus on her career outside the film industry.
The murder has sparked widespread anger on social media, with users demanding strict action against the accused and stronger measures for women’s safety, particularly in cases involving online relationships that turn abusive or violent. Police officials have assured a thorough investigation, stating that all suspects will be traced and interrogated. They also confirmed that further legal sections will be added as evidence develops.
