Actor Govinda’s niece and television actress Ragini Khanna has spoken publicly for the first time about the accidental shooting incident involving the veteran star in 2024, revealing that nearly 200 police personnel were deployed inside the hospital following the incident. Her remarks shed fresh light on the scale of the official response that followed the accident and address lingering public speculation around the case.
Ragini said the family was left stunned when news of the incident first emerged. She recalled learning about the shooting through her mother, Kaamini Khanna, Govinda’s sister. “My mother received a call saying Chichi Mama had been shot. We were all shocked. Shortly after, she was told that it was a self-inflicted injury,” Ragini said.
According to Ragini, her mother and brother rushed to the hospital immediately, while she reached nearly three hours later, still processing the shock. Govinda was admitted to Criticare Asia Hospital in Andheri West, where he underwent surgery and was later declared stable.
Addressing doubts raised by sections of the public over whether the incident was truly accidental, Ragini pointed to the extensive police deployment. She said around 200 police personnel were present inside the hospital, while another 50 officers were stationed outside Govinda’s Juhu residence as part of the investigation. “I have complete faith in the police. If there had been any other involvement, the truth would have come out,” she said.
The incident occurred in the early hours of October 1, 2024, at around 4:45 am at Govinda’s Juhu home. Police had earlier stated that the actor was placing his licensed .32 bore revolver into a cupboard after cleaning it when the weapon slipped from his hand and misfired. The bullet struck him in the left leg below the knee.
Govinda was rushed to hospital immediately and underwent surgery the same day. Doctors described his condition as stable post-operation, and he was discharged on October 4 after three days of observation. Police later confirmed that the firearm was legally owned and that no foul play was detected during the inquiry.
Ragini, who rose to prominence with her role as Suhana in the popular television show Sasural Genda Phool, said the incident had been traumatic for the family but expressed relief that Govinda recovered without long-term complications.
While the actor has since stayed away from public appearances, Ragini’s comments aim to put to rest speculation surrounding the episode, reaffirming that it was an unfortunate accident and not a criminal act.
