Popular South actors Dulquer Salmaan, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and actor Amit Chakkalakal are under investigation on charges of smuggling luxury cars. Recently, the Enforcement Directorate raided about 17 locations in Kerala, including the homes of Dulquer Salmaan, Prithviraj, and Amit.
These raids took place in cities like Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Coimbatore in Kerala. This also included the Chennai residence of popular South actor Mammootty. The investigation team is searching for documents in everyone's homes that were used to bring luxury vehicles from Bhutan to India.
Earlier, the ED had also raided several places in Kerala and seized 36 suspicious vehicles. This included Dulquer Salmaan's Land Rover Defender. Against this action, Dulquer Salmaan had filed a petition in the Kerala High Court to reclaim the car, in which he clarified that the luxury car purchased by him was not illegal and that he possessed all the documents. On this, the court reprimanded the customs team and ordered the temporary return of the car.
Operation Numkhor was launched by the Customs Department and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. The investigation revealed that several luxury cars are being imported into India from Bhutan. Bringing vehicles illegally is leading to a scam of tax evasion and customs tax evasion.
Vehicles brought from Bhutan are sent to India by showing them as second-hand, whereas in reality, they are brand new and less-driven vehicles.
Vehicles brought from Bhutan are registered in Himachal Pradesh, after which they are transported to several cities across the country.
