Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has addressed speculation surrounding his alleged affair with actress Urmila Matondkar during the 1990s, calling the discussions “products of the system and social media.” The director spoke candidly in a recent interview with Zoom TV, emphasizing his professional collaborations over personal rumours.
“I think she is the most versatile actress, that’s why I worked with her in so many films. I have worked more with Amitabh Bachchan, but no one talks about that,” Varma stated, reflecting on his extensive work with both stars. Varma and Matondkar collaborated on several notable films, including Rangeela, Satya, Daud, Ek Hasina Thi, Bhoot, and Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya. These projects, spanning 1990 to 2000, coincided with media reports of a personal relationship between the director and the actress.
Varma also addressed past controversies, including his comments on Sridevi, famously calling her thighs “thunder thighs.” “I don’t think it’s objectification. Besides her talent, these were also her qualities. This was her unique thing. To call it objectification is to objectify my comment,” he clarified, defending his remarks as observations rather than derogatory statements.
The director remains active in the industry, preparing for his next project, a horror drama titled Ghost in the Police Station. The film, set entirely in a police station, will feature Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role. Varma’s statement on his career and upcoming projects highlights his continued focus on filmmaking despite ongoing media scrutiny.
Ram Gopal Varma’s reflections underscore the persistent intersection of celebrity, media narratives, and public perception in Bollywood, as the director balances addressing rumours with promoting his professional endeavors.
The film community and fans continue to watch Varma’s next steps closely, particularly as Ghost in the Police Station promises to add another dimension to his eclectic career in Indian cinema.
