Ranveer Singh Apologises After Complaint Alleges Insult to Deity Shown in ‘Kantara’

Actor Ranveer Singh issued a public apology on Instagram after a complaint was filed against him in Panaji, accusing him of hurting religious sentiments by referring to “Chavundi Devi,” depicted in the film Kantara, as a “ghost” during an event at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
The complaint, lodged by the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, alleges that Singh’s remarks and on-stage mimicry of the character demean a revered Daiva associated with the Tulu community. Representatives Pramod Tuyekar and Dilip Shetye urged police to take action under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and demanded a written assurance that such comments would not recur. The organisation also appealed to IFFI organisers to frame a code of conduct to protect religious traditions from ridicule at public events.
The controversy stems from Singh’s interaction with Kantara director and actor Rishab Shetty during a session at the festival. Praising the film, Singh described a key possession sequence and referred to the deity portrayed in it as a “female ghost.” He then mimicked the moment on stage, prompting visible discomfort from Shetty. A second video circulating online shows Singh repeating the act offstage despite Shetty’s attempts to stop him.
The clips triggered sharp criticism on social media, with users accusing the actor of disrespecting a sacred figure and failing to understand cultural nuances. Several posts noted that Singh had “mocked the Devi” and risked provoking communal tension.
Singh’s apology came shortly after the complaint was filed. While he has not responded to the allegations in detail, his statement acknowledges the backlash and expresses regret for causing offence.
The incident has renewed debate over the responsibilities of public figures at cultural festivals, particularly when engaging with traditions rooted in regional and religious identity. Police are yet to confirm whether further action will be taken.
