Rashmika Worked 12 Hours Straight on ‘Thamma’: Director Says, “She Never Complained or Said She Was Tired”

Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s latest film Thamma continues its strong box-office run, earning ₹116 crore across India within 12 days. The film’s director, Aditya Sarpotdar, recently praised Rashmika’s dedication, revealing that she worked tirelessly for 12-hour shifts during the shoot without ever complaining.
Speaking about work hours in the film industry, Sarpotdar said, “Many assume that everyone can work 24 hours straight, but that’s neither physically nor mentally healthy. I believe a 12-hour shift is the right and practical limit. Anything beyond that is unfair. There are times when artists don’t even get a chance to go home between schedules, which is completely wrong.”
He also supported actor Deepika Padukone’s call for an 8-hour workday, saying, “It’s important to understand why Deepika made that request. As an actor, looking and feeling your best on camera matters. Instead of criticizing her, we should understand her reasoning.”
Aditya, who debuted as a director in 2008 with the Marathi film Uladhaal, added, “If an actor feels energetic enough to give their best in a 12-hour shift, that’s great. But if someone prefers to work only 8 hours, that’s equally fine — it’s a personal choice.”
Citing an example, he shared, “When Paresh Rawal was part of Thamma, he wasn’t well at one point. He told us he might have to quit on medical advice. So, we adjusted and completed his portions quickly — it’s our responsibility to look after our artists.”
“Rashmika Never Said She Was Tired”
Talking about Rashmika’s professionalism, Aditya said, “Rashmika worked 12 hours every day and never said she was tired. She’s probably at a stage in her career where she can handle that workload, but that doesn’t mean everyone should follow it. Work arrangements should be mutual between actors and directors.”
Rashmika: “Overworking Isn’t Right”
In an interview with Gulte, Rashmika admitted, “I work a lot, but honestly, it’s not right. This pace isn’t sustainable — please don’t do it. Prioritize comfort, rest, and sleep. Make sure you get 8–10 hours of sleep because that’s what will keep you healthy in the long run. I’ve experienced both extremes, and I can say overworking doesn’t help.”
In 2025 alone, Rashmika starred in several major films — Chhaava, Sikandar, Kubera, and Thamma.
Discussing her packed schedule, Rashmika added, “I find it hard to say no to my team, so I end up taking too much work. Ideally, I’d prefer a 9-to-5 schedule like a regular job so I can balance family, fitness, and rest. Right now, I’ve taken on more than I should, but I’m learning from it.”
The debate over working hours in the film industry gained momentum after Deepika Padukone reportedly exited Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film Spirit. Her demands included an 8-hour workday, profit-sharing, a high fee, and no Telugu dialogues. Having become a mother in September 2024, Deepika sought a five-day, 8-hour schedule — terms that the director reportedly declined, leading to her replacement in the project.
