Bollywood actors Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan encountered a brief protest in Surat on Sunday evening when a group of youths waved black flags outside Lalbhai Contractor Stadium, even as the celebrity couple’s presence added glamour to an Indian Street Premier League (ISPL) match that drew a full house.
The incident occurred as the actors arrived in the city to attend a private sporting engagement and support their team, the Tigers of Kolkata. While no injuries were reported and the situation was swiftly brought under control, videos of the protest circulated on social media later in the night, drawing attention alongside the high-profile match.
According to police officials, the protest was limited in scale and remained outside the stadium premises. As Saif Ali Khan’s convoy exited the venue, a small group raised slogans and waved black flags. On-duty police personnel intervened immediately, dispersed the crowd, and ensured the safe movement of the convoy. “The situation was controlled within minutes. There was no breach of security inside the stadium,” a senior police officer said.
Earlier in the day, Saif and Kareena arrived at Surat International Airport from Mumbai with their children, where they received a warm welcome from fans. Heavy security arrangements were put in place as the family was escorted directly to the venue amid a large gathering of admirers.
Inside the stadium, the couple’s presence energized spectators. Kareena Kapoor Khan’s animated reactions from the stands and the attendance of the couple’s children became a talking point among fans, adding to the festive atmosphere of the evening. Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif was also seen interacting with Kareena during the match.
On the field, Ahmedabad Lions clinched a tense four-wicket victory over Tigers of Kolkata to secure a playoff berth in Season 3 of the ISPL. Batting first, Kolkata managed 83/8 in 10 overs, with Nizam Ali’s 4/11 proving decisive for Ahmedabad. In reply, Sikandar Bhatti’s 42 anchored the chase before captain Jignesh Patel sealed the win with a boundary off the final ball.
The points table now places Ahmedabad Lions at the top with 14 points, while Tigers of Kolkata remain fourth with 10 points and must win their next match to confirm playoff qualification.
Despite the brief protest, the event concluded without disruption, underscoring Surat’s growing stature as a venue for major sporting fixtures and high-profile celebrity appearances, which continue to attract national attention and large crowds.
