Second Complaint Filed Against Ranveer Singh Over ‘Kantara’ Remarks, Sparks Renewed Controversy

This is the second complaint against Singh in connection with the Kantara controversy. Earlier, on December 2, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti lodged a complaint in Panaji, claiming that the actor had hurt religious sentiments by making fun of Chavundi (Chamunda) Devi, a deity depicted in the film. Following the Panaji complaint, Singh publicly apologised on Instagram, stating:

"My intention was to highlight Rishab Shetty's brilliant performance in the film. I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition, and faith of our country. If anything I said has hurt anyone's feelings, I sincerely apologize."

The controversy began during Singh’s appearance at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), where he commented on a scene involving Chavundi Devi, referring to the deity as a ‘ghost’ and mimicking the character. Video footage shows him continuing the mimicry even off-stage, despite director-actor Rishab Shetty gesturing for him to stop.

The remarks have provoked widespread criticism on social media, with many users calling for legal and social accountability. Singh’s comments have reignited debates on sensitivity toward religious sentiments in public forums, particularly when referencing sacred figures in popular culture.

With two FIRs now filed, legal proceedings against Singh are expected to follow, and the actor’s apology may be scrutinised in court. The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between creative expression and religious sensitivities in India’s entertainment landscape.
