South actress Malavika Mohanan recently spoke about women’s safety in Mumbai. She said that during her college days, when she used to travel by local trains, safety was merely a matter of luck. After her statement came out, Mumbai Police responded with an expression of regret and concern.

In a recent interview with Hauterfly, Malavika said, “Today, I have a car and a driver, so if someone asks me whether Mumbai is safe, I might say yes. But back when I was in college, my opinion was very different. I used to travel by local trains and public buses. At that time, I didn’t feel safe. It was just a matter of luck. You just had to hope that your journey would pass without any incident.”

Following her statement, Mumbai Police responded via their official social media account. The post read, “Ms. Malavika, we came across the online portal where you shared your experience and concerns regarding women's safety in the city. We understand that such experiences can be shocking and leave a lasting impact. That’s why we must reiterate—regardless of the time of day or the location in the city, please contact us at 112/100, and we will provide assistance as quickly as possible. Not reporting such incidents only encourages the offender.”

The statement further read, “Mumbai has always been a safe city for women, and we will leave no stone unturned to make it even better. Once reported, the offender will be dealt with in an appropriate and lawful manner. Please use your positive influence to spread this message. It can help in addressing such incidents, which are uncommon and should not be generalized.”
