Veteran Screenwriter Salim Khan Hospitalised in Mumbai; Son Salman Visits

Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai on Tuesday for medical care, family sources confirmed. His son, actor Salman Khan, visited him shortly after the admission, prompting concern among fans and members of the film industry. Officials said the admission was precautionary and related to age-associated health monitoring, though no detailed medical bulletin has been released.

The 90-year-old writer, widely regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s most influential storytellers, recently celebrated his milestone birthday. Known for reshaping mainstream film narratives in the 1970s and 1980s, he is best remembered for his creative partnership with Javed Akhtar. Together, the duo—popularly known as Salim-Javed—produced a string of landmark films that redefined commercial cinema and elevated the status of screenwriters in the industry.

Their collaborations include classics such as Sholay, Deewaar, Zanjeer, Don, Seeta Aur Geeta and Mr. India. Film historians credit these works with shaping the era’s narrative tone and helping establish Amitabh Bachchan’s enduring “Angry Young Man” persona, which became a defining cinematic archetype.

Salim Khan began his career in the film industry as an actor, debuting with Baraat. After appearing in nearly two dozen films—mostly in supporting roles—he shifted his focus to writing, a decision that ultimately changed the course of his career and influenced the trajectory of Hindi cinema storytelling. His scripts became known for sharp dialogue, strong character arcs and socially resonant themes, setting new benchmarks for mainstream screenwriting.

Family members have not indicated any immediate cause for alarm, and visitors have described his condition as stable. Still, the news has drawn attention across the film fraternity, where Salim Khan is regarded as a pioneering figure whose work shaped multiple generations of filmmakers and actors.

Beyond his professional legacy, he is also the patriarch of a prominent film family. His sons Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan are also active in the industry alongside Salman Khan.

Medical updates are expected once doctors complete routine evaluations. Industry colleagues and admirers have expressed wishes for his swift recovery, underscoring his enduring stature in Indian cinema.
