Vin Diesel Remembers Paul Walker at Cannes, Confirms ‘Fast’ Finale in 2028

Vin Diesel became emotional while remembering Paul Walker during a special Cannes screening marking 25 years of the Fast & Furious franchise. The actor also confirmed the series finale is planned for 2028.

The emotional reunion of the Fast & Furious family at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival turned into one of the most talked-about moments of the event after Vin Diesel paid tribute to late co-star Paul Walker during a special anniversary screening of the franchise’s first film.

Held on the sidelines of Cannes celebrations this week, the screening marked 25 years of The Fast and the Furious, the 2001 street-racing film that eventually grew into one of Hollywood’s biggest global franchises.

Emotional Cannes Moment

Diesel, visibly emotional during his appearance, spoke about his long friendship with Walker and described him as “a brother” rather than just a co-star. Audience members inside the packed screening venue applauded as the actor embraced Meadow Walker, who attended the event in support of the tribute.

According to reports from the festival venue, Diesel said he could not attend the occasion alone because the legacy of the franchise was deeply tied to Walker’s memory. He also acknowledged Meadow’s continued presence in the extended “Fast family”, calling her a source of strength through difficult years following Walker’s death in 2013.

The emotional exchange quickly spread across social media platforms late Friday evening, with fans sharing clips from the screening and Diesel’s speech.

Brotherhood Beyond Films

Over the years, Diesel has repeatedly spoken about how his bond with Walker extended beyond movie sets. Their on-screen partnership as Dominic Toretto and Brian O’Conner became central to the success of the franchise, but those close to the production have often described their off-screen friendship as equally strong.

Before his death, Walker named Diesel the godfather of Meadow Walker, reflecting the closeness between the two families. Since then, Diesel has maintained a public and personal connection with Meadow, including walking her down the aisle during her wedding ceremony.

The actor also named his youngest daughter Pauline in memory of Walker, a gesture he has previously described as deeply personal.

‘Fast’ Finale Confirmed

During the Cannes appearance, Diesel also confirmed that the final chapter of the Fast & Furious saga is currently targeted for release in 2028.

Speaking to fans during the anniversary event, he said the decision to continue and conclude the franchise properly came from the loyalty of audiences who had supported the films for over two decades.

Industry insiders familiar with the production said the upcoming finale is expected to return to the franchise’s early street-racing roots in Los Angeles. Diesel hinted that the concluding film could also include an emotional reunion connected to Walker’s character Brian O’Conner, although no official storyline details have been announced yet.

The franchise, launched in 2001, has earned more than $7 billion worldwide and remains one of Universal Pictures’ biggest commercial successes.

Expansion Into Television

Apart from the film finale, Diesel also confirmed that the Fast & Furious universe is expanding into television projects. The announcement reportedly came during a recent NBCUniversal presentation, where streaming platform Peacock unveiled plans to develop new shows tied to the franchise.

Sources familiar with the matter said the television adaptations would focus on preserving the core themes of loyalty, family, cars and action that shaped the original films.

Diesel indicated he only agreed to the expansion after assurances that the identity of the franchise would remain intact.

Remembering Paul Walker

Walker died on November 30, 2013, in a high-speed car crash in Santa Clarita, California. He was 40. The actor had been attending a charity event when the Porsche Carrera GT he was travelling in crashed and caught fire. Authorities later confirmed it was a single-vehicle accident.

His death shocked fans worldwide and forced production changes for Furious 7, which was eventually completed with the help of CGI and Walker’s brothers standing in for unfinished scenes.

More than a decade later, tributes continue from both fans and family. Meadow Walker frequently shares photographs and memories of her father online and remains active through the Paul Walker Foundation.

Legacy Still Strong

Even after several sequels and spin-offs, Walker’s presence continues to shape the franchise’s identity. Fans attending the Cannes screening described the atmosphere as nostalgic and emotional, particularly during scenes featuring the original cast.

For Diesel, the connection appears deeply personal even today. As the franchise moves toward its planned 2028 finale, the memory of Paul Walker remains closely tied to the journey that began with underground street races in Los Angeles 25 years ago.
