Last Day for Central Government Employees to Shift from NPS to UPS: Process, Eligibility, and Consequences

Tuesday, September 30, 2025, marks the final deadline for central government employees to shift from the National Pension System (NPS) to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). The government had already extended this deadline once in June 2025, giving employees an additional three months to make the switch. Now, with the window closing today, many employees are rushing to complete the process.

Will the Government Extend the Deadline Again?

Experts believe another extension is uncertain. According to tax and investment expert Balwant Jain, the decision may depend on how many employees have opted to migrate. If less than 50% of NPS subscribers shift, the Centre may consider an extension, otherwise not.

Who Can Shift to UPS?

The UPS migration window is open for three categories of central government employees:

1. Existing NPS subscribers who joined services on or before March 31, 2025.

2. New recruits who joined on or after April 1, 2025.

3. Retirees who retired on or before March 31, 2025.

How to Shift from NPS to UPS?

Employees can shift through two methods:

Offline: Submit Form A2 at the nodal office. The form is available on the NSDL website.

Once verified, an acknowledgement number and e-signed migration form will be generated.

Consequences of Missing the Deadline

Employees who fail to shift by September 30 will remain under the NPS and lose the opportunity to opt for UPS benefits.

With the final hours ticking, central government employees are advised to act immediately to avoid missing this crucial deadline.
