The Top India Survey Highlights Financial Struggles Inside India’s Entertainment Industry

India’s entertainment industry may still look glamorous from the outside, but for many people working behind the camera, the reality has become increasingly difficult. A new survey by The Top India has revealed that a large section of industry workers are dealing with reduced opportunities, lower payments, and rising financial pressure.

The survey was conducted after conversations with more than 1,000 people connected to film, television, and digital content production. The findings suggest that many professionals are not getting regular work, while those who are employed are often being paid far less than before.

Several workers claimed that their earnings have dropped by nearly 50 to 60 percent over recent months. This decline has affected not only junior artists but also experienced technicians and crew members who have spent years in the industry.

The struggle is especially visible among assistant directors, lightmen, camera operators, makeup artists, equipment suppliers, production crew members, and character actors. These professionals form the backbone of film and television production, yet many are now finding it hard to manage their monthly expenses.

One major reason behind the growing stress is the cost of living in Mumbai, where most entertainment companies and production houses are based. Popular industry hubs such as Andheri, Juhu, and Bandra are among the city’s most expensive areas.

Industry workers say that renting even a modest apartment in these locations can cost around ₹50,000 per month. For freelancers who depend entirely on project-based payments, maintaining a stable life in Mumbai is becoming increasingly difficult.

Unlike major Bollywood celebrities who continue to receive large-scale projects and premium fees, technicians and support staff often face immediate financial trouble whenever productions slow down. A delay in shooting schedules or budget cuts can directly affect their income for months.

People associated with the industry also say that many producers and digital platforms have become cautious with spending. Projects are being delayed, budgets are shrinking, and production activity has slowed compared to previous years. As a result, the workload available for mid-level and junior professionals has reduced significantly.

Some workers reportedly have started looking for alternate sources of income, while others are borrowing money or depending on savings to survive. A few have even left Mumbai temporarily because managing rent and daily expenses became impossible without steady work.

The findings shared through the The Top India survey have brought attention to a side of the entertainment industry that audiences rarely see. Behind every film, web series, or television show is a large network of workers whose livelihoods depend on regular production activity.

While the industry continues to celebrate box office numbers and star-driven projects, thousands of people working in technical and support roles are quietly facing one of the toughest phases of their careers.
