Trump Plans Extra Tariff on Indian Rice, Cites Dumping of Cheap Imports Hurting US Farmers

US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose extra tariffs on Indian rice, accusing New Delhi of dumping cheap rice and causing losses to American farmers. The move also targets fertilizer imports from Canada.

Trump to Impose Extra Tariff on Indian Rice, Says Cheap Imports Hurting US Farmers

Washington D.C. | Updated 1 hour ago:
US President Donald Trump has hinted at imposing additional tariffs on rice imports from India, accusing the country of “dumping cheap rice” into the American market and hurting local producers. Trump made the statement during a press briefing at the White House, where he unveiled a new financial aid package for US farmers.

According to Trump, countries such as India, Vietnam, and Thailand are selling rice in the United States at prices that are much lower than domestic rates, making it hard for American farmers to compete. “This kind of dumping must stop,” he said, emphasizing that foreign governments are unfairly flooding the US market with low-cost agricultural goods.

Trump also asked his Treasury Secretary whether India had received any special concessions on rice trade. The Secretary clarified that discussions between the two nations are ongoing and no final decision has been reached.

Extra Tariffs Likely on Canadian Fertilizers

During the same briefing, Trump warned that fertilizers imported from Canada could face higher tariffs if their prices continue to fall. He noted that a large portion of the US fertilizer supply — especially potash — is imported from Canada, adding that “strict duties will be imposed if it becomes too cheap.”

Canada remains the largest supplier of potash to the US, and its exports have so far enjoyed tariff exemptions due to existing trade agreements. However, Trump’s remarks signal a possible shift in trade policy as inflation and rising costs put pressure on American farmers and his political campaign.

Many farmers worry that new tariffs on fertilizers might increase production costs further, deepening their financial burden. Although the US recently added potash and phosphate to its critical minerals list, uncertainty over import prices continues to concern the agricultural sector.

Impact on Indian Farmers and Exporters

Experts say that if the US imposes higher duties on Indian rice, prices for Indian varieties in the American market will likely surge. Consumers preferring Indian rice, particularly basmati, could face higher prices at stores. On the other hand, Indian exporters and farmers may suffer from reduced demand, as higher costs make their products less competitive.

Currently, India’s rice exports to the US represent a small share of its overall trade, but traders dealing directly with American buyers may face losses and be forced to explore new export destinations.

Tariff Hike Linked to Russian Oil Imports

Trump also raised the overall tariff on Indian imports to 50%, adding a new 25% duty linked to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil. The move fits within his “America First” economic agenda, which aims to protect local industries through steep import barriers.

Trade analysts believe that while the direct impact may be limited due to smaller trade volumes, the political and diplomatic repercussions could be significant for India-US relations.
