The Ministry of Education used the India AI Impact Summit 2026 to outline its approach to integrating artificial intelligence across India's education system, with a focus on moving from policy discussions to large-scale implementation.
A special session titled “Ministry of Education – Pushing the Frontier of AI in India” was held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on February 17. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister of State for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary participated in the session.
The discussion examined how AI can be integrated into school education, higher education, skilling, research and innovation while remaining aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the government's broader Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
From AI Policy to Large-Scale Implementation
The Education Ministry said its approach is shifting from developing policy frameworks to implementing AI-enabled initiatives across the education ecosystem.
The ministry highlighted public digital infrastructure, Centres of Excellence, teacher training, curriculum integration and partnerships with industry and startups as key components of this transition.
Rather than treating AI as a series of isolated technology pilots, the summit session focused on building systems that can support its wider and more sustainable use in education.
AI to Shape India's Knowledge Economy
Pradhan said AI could play a transformative role in India's education sector and contribute to the country's ambition of becoming a global knowledge leader.
Speaking at the summit, he encouraged students and young professionals to develop innovative solutions that could strengthen India's position in the rapidly changing global AI landscape.
The minister also stressed the connection between AI education and education powered by AI, indicating that students will need both technological understanding and the ability to use emerging tools effectively.
Centre of Excellence at IIT Madras
One of the initiatives highlighted during the session was the Centre of Excellence in AI for Education at IIT Madras.
The centre is part of the government's efforts to build institutional capacity around artificial intelligence in education. IIT Madras Director Professor V. Kamakoti participated in the summit discussions along with academics, technology experts and industry representatives.
The broader objective is to connect research and innovation with practical applications that can eventually be deployed across India's education system.
Teachers, Curriculum and Digital Infrastructure
The ministry's AI strategy extends beyond providing students with access to AI tools.
The summit highlighted the importance of teacher training, curriculum integration and national digital platforms in creating an education system capable of adapting to AI-driven changes.
This approach places educators, institutions and public digital infrastructure alongside technology itself, recognising that large-scale adoption depends on the capacity of the education system to use AI effectively and responsibly.
Industry and Academia Join Discussion
The session brought together representatives from academia, technology companies and the investment ecosystem.
Participants included Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu, technologist Vibhu Mittal, Peak XV Partners Managing Director Rajan Anandan, IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal, IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti and IIT Bombay professor Sunita Sarawagi. The session was moderated by IIT Jammu Director Manoj S. Gaur.
The discussions covered AI governance, national learning platforms, indigenous AI development and the responsible deployment of advanced AI models.
Responsible AI Becomes Central to Education Roadmap
The Education Ministry's summit discussions also placed emphasis on responsible AI adoption.
According to the ministry, governance frameworks and responsible deployment need to develop alongside technological capabilities. The session sought to contribute to a national roadmap for AI in education and strengthen cooperation between government, universities, researchers, startups and industry.
The approach reflects a broader shift in India's AI policy conversation — from simply expanding access to artificial intelligence towards determining how the technology can be integrated into public systems at scale.
