French PM Sebastian Lecornu Resigns After Just 27 Days

Sebastian Lecornu resigned as Prime Minister of France on October 6, barely 27 days after taking office on September 9. He had announced his cabinet on October 5, only to submit his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron about 12 hours later.

At 39 years old, Lecornu was the youngest Prime Minister in recent French history and was considered a close ally of Macron. He became the fifth PM since Macron’s re-election in 2022 and the third PM following the dissolution of parliament last year. Reports suggest his resignation stemmed from dissatisfaction and controversy over the formation of his new cabinet.

This marks the shortest tenure in French democratic history, and in the last 22 months, five Prime Ministers have resigned, prompting opposition voices to call for Macron’s resignation.

Controversies Around His Cabinet

Lecornu’s cabinet faced immediate criticism. Out of the 18-member cabinet, 12 ministers were holdovers from former PM François Bayrou’s government, which led critics to argue there was no real change. Controversially, Bruno Le Maire, Macron’s Economy Minister for seven years, was appointed Defense Minister, further fueling dissatisfaction among both opposition and allies.

Early Life and Ambitions

Sebastian Lecornu was born on June 11, 1986, in Eaubonne, France. His father worked as an aeronautical technician and his mother as a medical secretary. His grandfather fought in World War II, inspiring Lecornu’s lifelong interest in military and politics. He initially aspired to become a soldier.

He attended a private Catholic school and later earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and social sciences, a law degree, and a master’s in social law from Panthéon-Assas University, Paris.

Political Career and Achievements

Lecornu began his political journey as a parliamentary assistant at 19. He served as mayor of Vernon and became France’s youngest Defense Minister at 39. Known for his tough economic decisions, he opposed tax hikes, cracked down on welfare fraud, and closed under-enrolled schools.

Initially part of the Republican Party, he joined Macron’s government in 2017 and later handled multiple ministerial portfolios, earning recognition for his administrative skills and reform-oriented approach.

Honors and Recognition

Lecornu has been honored both in France and internationally for his contributions to politics, public service, agriculture, arts, and culture.
